Two-Start Pitcher Preview: 8-9-15

Quite a few prospects making two-starts weeks, but none really catch the eye to go out and grab. There are a handful of aces making two starts though, Madison Bumgarner, Chris Sale, Johnny Cueto, Zack Grienke, and Matt Harvey. If you are hoping to stream a guy with two starts, it is not a good week, but there are some decent streaming options to take a look at.

Tier One

There are plenty of aces going, and none to really worry about. Bumgarner gets two starts at home this week, where he has noticeably been better this season. He has a 2.43 ERA at home, and an ERA over four on the road. He will have a shot at two teams who have above average strikeout rates against left-handed pitching. Some of you might be worried with Carlos Carrasco against the Yankees. One thing, he is at home, so he avoids the short porch. Lefties are hitting .220 off of him, with a .271 wOBA. He also keeps the ball on the ground. Matt Harvey, Chris Sale, and Zack Greinke are all in solid spots for both starts this week. Fire them up as you usually do.

Tier Two

Gio Gonzalez draws a couple of questionable matchups this week, with the Dodgers and the Giants, both on the road help him some, but still tough matchups. Both teams rank in the top ten in wRC+, but an unscathed week will probably be the case. Matt Shoemaker has found himself in a nice groove, striking out 27 in the last three starts, while allowing zero earned runs. He should likely keep his roll going against the White Sox, but may run into some trouble against Kansas City. The Royals do not strike out, and grind out a ton of at-bats. Joe Ross is going to have a make or break week for fantasy owners, taking on the Dodgers, and the Giants. Both are two top offenses against right-handed pitching, so it will be interesting to see how he does. I am not writing him off for the benches this week, but there is some risk with him. Jon Niese against the Rockies at home is a nice streamer, the Rockies took over for the worst wRC+ in the majors against left-handed pitching, and own a 24.4% strikeout rate.

Tier Three

We are at a point in the season where prospects are showing up more and more in this category, yet I don’t trust any of them. Jon Gray has the friendliest matchups, facing the Padres and the Mets, while others face tougher offenses. If you are behind in innings and just going out of the way to add pitchers, he is worth a look. Miguel Gonzalez and J.A. Happ are worth a look in deep leagues. Gonzalez is a fly ball pitcher, but heads to two very pitcher friendly ballparks this week. Happ gets the Mets and the Cardinals who are near the bottom of the pack against left-handed pitching.
