Two-Start Pitcher Preview: 8-30-15

The two-start pitchers are lined up for this week, and there are a few Coors starts to keep an eye out for, as well as some possible streamers. The aces take up most of the room in this week’s chart, and something may change from the beginning of the week.

Tier One

Usually we keep it light in the tier one section, but actually a few starts to talk about with these aces. Felix Hernandez has been a hot topic of late, and not because he has been very good. He has a 6.60 ERA in the month of August, and the Mariners are skipping his start against the Astros Monday. He faces the A’s later in the week, and Houston was the team I was concerned about. He has had no problem against Oakland this season, or in his career, so we will see what is going on. Madison Bumgarner is starting in Coors this week, and the Rockies offense against left-handed pitching has been terrible this season. Colorado has a 65 wRC+ against lefties, with a 22.9% strikeout rate. MadBum may have a few earned on him, but the strikeout upside and win will be there. Chris Sale draws two starts this week, and actually against unfavorable matchups for both of them. The Twins and Royals both hit left-handed pitching well, and the Royals don’t strikeout a ton. His starts against them this season have been okay, but the upside he brings each starts, you start him anyway. All the other aces do not have much worth mentioning, and fire them up.

Tier Two

Justin Verlander took a no-no late in the game, and has been pitching very well in the last few starts. He has allowed one earned run in the last four starts, and his last non-quality start came against Kansas City. I am not a fan of the matchups for him this week, taking on Cleveland and the Royals. If you are chasing stats, he is worth a look, but I think we could see a back track with him this week. Joe Ross has been an interesting fantasy player this season, he landed a rotation spot, has been pitching well, and may hit an innings limit at some point soon. He draws the Cardinals and the Braves, and neither offense has been entirely threatening lately or this season. Patrick Corbin has been pretty good this season, but I will be skipping him against the Rockies in Coors. He could turn out an average start with how bad the Rockies are against southpaws, but I will play it safe in this matchup. Gio Gonzalez and Tyson Ross are two guys I like this week, great spot for both of them. If you are looking to stream, Eduardo Rodriguez is going to play the Phillies and the Yankees, who are both average offenses against southpaws.

Tier Three

Ivan Nova is a pitcher I am not sold on for this week, as well as the rest of the season. He has a 4.50 ERA, with a 4.42 FIP, 4.68 xFIP. Has not been particularly good this year, and it shows in most starts. Some of these young, inexperienced pitchers are in play this week for desperate teams due to the matchups. Jerad Eickhoff and Chris Narveson both face average to lesser offenses in both starts, and show promise as young arms. To state the obvious, nobody really worth streaming like Yohan Flande, Tyler Duffey, Felix Doubront, and David Holmberg.
