Turf Talk – The Crazy Closer Coaster

The Crazy Closer Coaster.

With the season just beginning to settle in, several closers are already in danger of losing their job. If you are the type of fantasy player that rides the wire when it comes to closers, the next few weeks are crucial to watch. Here are five teams you should be aware of.

Tolleson in Texas

The closer situation got more precarious in Texas when Tolleson blew a save on Wednesday. It sounds like there is not a lot of faith in Tolleson down in the Lone Star state; one or two more blowups from him might jeopardize his hold on the closer role. Keone Kela would have to be considered the favorite to take up the mantle, but don’t sleep on Sam Dyson either.

The Seattle Situation

Cishek blew the save on Friday, giving up a home run against Oakland to take the loss. I had Cishek pegged as the second worst closer just behind the Phillies bullpen. If Cishek continues to struggle, it might force Seattle’s hand and make Joaquin Benoit come into the picture.

The Phillies Phailure

Davier Hinojosa was giving the first crack at nailing down saves in Philly and flamed out immediately. It sounds like Jeanmar Gomez might be the favorite bullpen arm of the moment, but if you’re looking to chase saves, you would be better served turning your attention elsewhere.

The Rallying Rays

While the Rays have not recorded a save yet, their bullpen picture is becoming clearer. It seems Alex Colome has come away as the favorite. He pitched 2 innings to take the win against Toronto on Tuesday. Don’t sleep on Danny Farquhar though, as he is not completely out of the picture.

The Bumbling Braves

Jason Grilli gave up a run against the Nationals in the 10th inning on Monday. His position as closer was already precarious before coming into the season. While the Braves will not have a ton of closing opportunities, their second option, Arodys Vizcaino, could perform at an elite level if given the chance.
