Third Baseman Notables

Kyle Seager (Seattle Mariners). I’ve found Seager is generally the last option on the table for third basemen in the early-to-middle rounds before a clear tier dropoff. However, he should be one of the first players selected in his tier, thanks to his high floor, clean bill of health and hidden upside. He’s just entering his peak, so it’s possible he turns these seasons hitting .260 with 20-25 HRs into a quality average with 30-plus bombs.

Pedro Alvarez (Pittsburgh Pirates). Power tends to get scooped up early in drafts, leaving most late corner-infield options competent in one or two categories and harmful in one or two others. Alvarez is the souped-up version of that scenario; sure, he’ll likely be a batting-average downer, but he could challenge for the home-run title in his new role as an everyday first baseman. Remember, he hit 36 home runs the last time he had 500-plus at-bats.
