Outfielder Notables
Starling Marte (Pittsburgh Pirates). When I’ve done mock drafts this offseason, I end up with Marte virtually every time, and the rare instances where he’s not on my team involve me purposefully avoiding him to see how others view his value. Answer: not high enough. Just 26, Marte delivered a fantastic second half to set himself up as a potential 2015 breakout. With the right amount of ABs, we could be looking at 95 percent of what Carlos Gomez brings as a first-round pick.
Bryce Harper (Washington Nationals). Fantasy owners have grown accustomed to paying near full value for Harper’s incredible upside and then watching him fail to come close to approaching it. No more. I’m not taking Harper with one of my first few picks until the breakout comes, because while I can still win my league if he shines on someone else’s team, it’ll be very hard to do so if he again falls well short of his draft price on my team.
Khris Davis (Milwaukee Brewers). Davis looked like he had a ton of untapped potential when he hit .279 with 11 home runs in 136 at-bats during his first major-league stint. He seemed to struggle out of the gate last season and began pressing, losing the patience that made him so effective in the minors. The good news is that he’s identified it as his major downfall from last season, and a year batting .275 with 30-plus homers is possible.
