Notable Higher Ranked Player

Brandon Maurer: My Rank- 45 ECR- 85

I have Brandon Maurer ranked 40 spots higher than my peers. A huge discrepancy, indeed. No, I’m not pegging Maurer as a source of saves, but he should provide excellent ratios and a strikeout per inning out of the Padres’ pen. His stuff kicked up to a whole new level when he moved from the Mariners’ rotation to their bullpen, and the results followed. In 37.1 innings as a reliever Maurer tallied a 2.17 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with a 25.3% K and 3.3% BB. He’s not recognized as one yet, but Maurer could be blossoming into an elite reliever.

Notable Lower Ranked Player

Santiago Casilla: My Rank- 34 ECR- 26

The Giants re-signed former closer Sergio Romo this offseason to a two-year contract worth $15 million. Homers killed him last year, as the rest of his numbers lined up with his excellent 2013 campaign. Santiago Casilla will get the first chance to close, but his leash will be short with Romo waiting to usurp the closer gig. And as a non-closing reliever, Casilla’s value would be limited.

* My rankings listed in the write-ups reflect where I have them ranked on FantasyPros. On FantasyPros, relief pitcher eligible starters were included with the relievers. For the purpose of these rankings, I’ve removed the reliever eligible pitchers who project to start so that there is an apples to apples comparison of closers and setup men to one another.
