The Cardinals and David Eckstein have reportedly agreed to terms on a three-year deal.
Eckstein isn't the worst player to get a three-year deal this winter (Mike Matheny), but unless the deal is worth less than $3 million per year -- doubtful -- it's a bad signing. This is a player who has hit .252/.325/.325 and .276/.339/.332 the last two years. He would have been a nice one-year stopgap at shortstop, but if the Cardinals were willing to go long-term, they should have paid the extra million or two per year it would have taken to lure Placido Polanco.
