They trade their 4th-round draft pick and $39m to the Cubs to move up to the 1st round. The Yankees draft a guy who decides instead to play football.
The Cubs draft some kid with their 4th round pick from the Yankees named Rabe Buth who hits the game-winning double in Game 7 of the World Series. By this point, the Red Sox have traded David Wells to the Cubs. They get Mark Prior and Kerry Wood and Corey Patterson and Carlos Zambrano and Matt Clement (who re-signed with the Cubs by this point). (Hey! It's Christmas, okay?) David Wells wins game 7 of the World Series against the Yankees in relief as the Yankees blow a 14-run lead. Wells is wearing the Bambino's cap when he does it. People in the Bronx begin to start mumbling about Curses. Nomar scores the winning run.
Yankees get angry and sign Randy Johnson to a 7-year, $148m deal during November 2005. They fire Vazquez to make room for him. The Red Sox sign Vazquez, who leads them to 4 World Series rings during the 4 years of Varitek's new contract. Pedro becomes the new closer and closes out Game 7 in each of the Series wins.
Happy holidays everyone.
