I leave for work at 3:45 today and all hell breaks loose on my way.
When my editor told me Nomar had been traded to the Cubs, I (like most everyone else) asked "For Clement?"
When he told me "No, Cabrera to Boston and Gonzalez to Montreal" I naturally paused then said "And who else?" Ah, but there wasn't anyone else. I thought perhaps Clement was part of the deal and my editor was just pulling my leg--hell I even hoped Livan Hernandez was part of the deal.
When I found out it wasn't a joke, I don't think I said a word. When I found out the Sox got hornswoggled even worse than I thought, I said a few words (none repeatable here).
Seriously, how do any of the teams inolved in the deal (Boston's not alone in this) let Chicago get away with giving up NOTHING? Guzman or Pie or someone decent should have went to Minny. Major screw-up by the other three teams in letting Chicago off the hook so easily. My cap is tipped to you, Mr. Hendry.
Nomar to the Cubs. Sad, sad day but you had to know it was coming. I've said it before, Nomar didn't want to be there. He proved it by not wanting to play in that third game of the Yankees series at the Stadium. If he was gonna walk, Theo had to get something for him. But certainly more than what he got.
Theo HAD to come out of that trade with Clement but instead he gets Cabrera, Minky and Roberts essentially. Not great but not terrible either. Why on earth he didn't hold out for Clement, however is beyond me.
The good of this deal: Cabrera's a fine young SS who they should be able to lock up. Minky's Gold Glove at 1B will do wonders (Sox fans you know we'd be hollering for a defensive 1B when Ortiz/Millar are butchering balls next month when they need every game they can get) and Roberts offers good speed and defense off the bench if nothing else.
Like I said, Theo had to get Clement in that deal and he failed so this trade looks bad. It's not a disaster but he had to get more than that for Nomar.
They're sacrificing offense for defense. If Schilling and Pedro can get locked in and Lowe (ugh) ever gets turned around even slightly, the offense won't have to score too many runs.
Just should have held out for Clement. That's my biggest gripe of the whole thing.
I'll miss ya Nomar, I really will. Just don't come back to bite us in October, whether the Sox are there or not.
