Circling the Bases: Midseason rankings

July 7, 2004
Tristan H. Cockcroft
Senior Fantasy Writer
Tell Tristan your opinion

Circling the Bases is our Fantasy Baseball expert column, full of insider information, advice and in-depth analysis. Every Wednesday year-round, Tristan H. Cockcroft provides an array of regular-season coverage, offseason player analysis and preseason draft strategy.

When Astros pinch hitter Mike Lamb struck out swinging to end Monday night's contest at San Diego, a game the Padres won 2-1, it marked a significant point in the season: the literal midway point in terms of all scheduled games among the 30 major-league teams.

Of course, that date has little relevance to baseball fans -- or Fantasy owners -- as the All-Star break has long been considered the traditional "halfway" point to the season.

Mark Teixeira, with six homers and 14 RBI in his last nine games, is second among AL first basemen.(Getty Images)
Every breakdown, regarding first- and second-half splits, is based upon that division of the season, even though there are technically more games played before the All-Star break than afterward. Still, we're talking about one week's difference, and in case you haven't noticed, the All-Star Game is this coming Tuesday and we're just four days away from the end of the traditional first half.

Baseball players enjoy the three days' rest the break provides, and Fantasy owners consider it a time to refresh their minds and retool for the upcoming pennant chase. But how can one tell which players might heat up in the season's final months? Which performers might never recover from the three-day All-Star hibernation, instead declining dramatically down the stretch?

In order to help evaluate players for a run at your league's championship, listed below are my 2004 second-half player rankings broken down by position and league, based on Rotisserie 5x5 scoring and traditional roster guidelines.

Players are ranked based on their projected value from July 15 through the completion of the regular season on Oct. 3, so certain first-half stars could be ranked lower than expected, while some players who have been invisible are ranked higher. You should view these rankings as you would a "cheat sheet" if you were preparing to draft a fresh team based only on anticipated second-half statistics.

The rankings include the top 20 catchers; 15 first basemen, second basemen, third basemen and shortstops; 50 outfielders; 12 designated hitters; 60 starting pitchers; and 25 relief pitchers.

Players are listed at the position they have played the most in 2004, assuming at least 20 games played at the position. If the player has not appeared in 20 games at any position, he is listed where he played the most in 2003. You can find more notable two-position performers like Mike Piazza among National League first basemen, Chipper Jones among NL outfielders and Chone Figgins among American League outfielders.
