Total Bases / At-Bats
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

what amazinz said:

(1*singles + 2*doubles + 3*triples + 4*homers)/AtBats

the way to actually calculate it using common stats:
(hits + doubles + 2*triples + 3*homers)/AtBats
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he'll drown because you forgot to teach him to swim.

another way to look at it... slug. percentage and BA is kinda similar. BA measures the percentage of the time you get a hit, it counts all hits equally. Slugging percentage counts them as 1 for singles, 2 for doubles, 3 for triples, and 4 for home runs. So it's the same information as batting average, with a little more info cos bigger hits count more.
Manny Ramirez....\$20 million
Pedro Martinez....\$17.5 million
Curt Schilling...\$12 million (and a \$2 million bonus)
Never hearing a Yankee fan chant 1918 again...priceless.
