For anyone who played fantasy baseball in the 80's or even early 90's.....where in the draft was Don Mattingly selected? Was he a first rounder during his prime years?

He wasn't in the early 90s when I started playing but those were his decline years when he was basically a end of the draft bench player in our league. You would need to find players that go back to the mid 80s to get into his valuable fantasy years.

Donnie Baseball was THE reason, why I liked the Yankees when I was a kid.

Now as an adult, I'm not that big of a fan.

But to answer your question, this is my first year playing fantasy baseball, but I'm sure that he was a first rounder. I mean who else during that era had his combination of power and average? If I recall back then, you either hit for average (Wade Boggs), or hit homers, but K a lot (Strawberry, Pete Incavilgia, etc). Mattingly did both.

Be interesting if anyone here went back that far.

Even though they were his declining years, I am extremely surprised to hear he was a bench player.

Well when I started playing was in 91, and he was basically a .300-10-70 guy. I remeber him making quite a few stints as a waiver wire guy or fall back to cover injuries. I hated seeing Brett treated that way at the end of his career, but fantasy baseball is pretty cut-throat on our personal legends.

I know what you mean. I forget how much Donnie was hurt towards the end of his career. Still can't imagine him being on the FA list, though. :-/
