Even during his meteoric start, I wasn't too high on Austin Kearns. He lacks the sheer power of Adam Dunn, and his main asset is putting the bat on the ball. I think history shows those kinds of batters grow into that role over a period of time in the big leagues, and rarely start off with a full solid season. But make no mistake, Kearns will be a star one day.
But who to choose between Alou and Kearns? I predicted that the Cubs, even after their horrid start, would make a run at the playoffs. I'm not so sure anymore. They have so much pitching talent on that team it's incredible I don't hear more about it. But things are clicking on the Cubs team. If they don't start to win, it will affect Alou's stats.
However, at this point, I would take Alou over Kearns. Griffey will be back in a couple weeks, and Kearns will get the short end of the stick again. On the other hand, if Alou stays hot, the benefits will be awesome thanks to Slamming Sammy.
