Yet another Newbie Question.....

Postby quickm0ng00se » Mon Mar 31, 2003 9:21 pm

O.K. I had three things going against me going into my draft.

1) I have never played fantasy baseball. Footbal yes, but that's quite different.

2) I have never participated in an automated draft.

3) I was invited into the league as a last minute, 'Hey our draft is tomorrow' fill person.

All that considered, I think I did OK, but would appreciate any input. I am in a 14 team league. Our scoring is standard,

Batters- Runs, Hits, Home Runs, Runs Batted In, Stolen Bases, Errors, and Batting Average.

Pitchers- Wins, Complete Games, Shutouts, Saves, Strikeouts, Earned Run Average, and (Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched.

So here is my team;

C - Benito Santiago
1B - Richie Sexson
2B - Mark Ellis
3B - Troy Glaus
SS - Miguel Tejada
OF - Sammy Sosa
OF - Jim Edmonds
OF - Hideki Matsui
Util - Adam Dunn
Bench- Roger Cedeno
Bench- Randall Simon

SP - Greg Maddux
SP - Brian Lawrence
RP - John Smoltz
RP - Jeff Weaver
P - Kevin Brown
P - Tomo Ohka
P - Roberto Hernandez
Bench - Ben Weber
Bench - Ismael Valdes
Bench - Dan Wright

I know it's not as strong top to bottom as others, but with 14 teams, the later rounds were pretty well picked over. I have my eye on a couple of possible sleeper free agents, but with only two bench positions I want to make sure it's the right move.

Thanks in advance for any input, and I promise as I catch on I'll contribute more to other peoples questions.

Your offense should be ok, well actually pretty good. I don't like mark ellis tho, or santiago at catcher this year, but he can surprise.

pitching staff is weak. Maybe you should try and get rid of a bat or 2 through trades and pick up an ace...
some people are real high on matsui and adam dunn, and randall simon may have a solid year at 1b, so maybe trade dunn, or even simon, and someone else for a solid strikeout + wins pitcher.

you don't really need middle relievers as well, if you want keep one, but you have roberto hernandez and ben weber. drop one and look for a sleeper starter or another closer

Thank you for pointing out the fact that I have a couple of middle releivers, who really won't help me in my leagues scoring set-up as much as a good closer. As soon as I read that, it was like a bulb went off over my head. Makes sense.

I'm feeling out a couple of the teams in my league who need some offense, trying to get some strength for my bullpen. Although it seems like fantasy baseball is amazingly similar to fantasy football as far as trades are concerned. Everybody wants everything from me, without giving much.

Still trying though. I'll keep you posted. Thanks Again....
