Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Texas Rangers catcher Gerald Laird suffered a torn ligament in his thumb during Thursday's game against Kansas City and was placed on the disabled list.
Laird hurt the thumb in the first inning of Texas' 6-3 win while making a defensive play at the plate. After tagging out Royals first baseman Ken Harvey at home for the final out of the frame, Laird did not return and was replaced in the lineup by Rod Barajas.
Laird will undergo an MRI exam on Friday to determine the extent of the injury. If surgery is required, he could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks.
In 29 games this season, Laird is batting .307 with no homers and 12 RBI.
