St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Tampa Bay infielder Eduardo Perez was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with a torn left Achilles tendon.

Perez is going to have surgery performed on Wednesday and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. The surgery will be performed by Rays orthopedist Dr. Koco Eaton at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

The injury occurred in Sunday's loss to the Anaheim Angels when Perez pulled up lame and fell to the dirt rounding second base in the fifth inning of an 8-4 loss to the Angels. He was then carted off the field.

Perez, the son of Hall of Famer Tony Perez, was 1-for-2 in the game. This season Perez has a .211 batting average with one home run and seven RBI. In 597 career games, Perez has a .246 batting average with 59 homers and 233 RBI.

In June 2001, Perez underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee and missed the rest of the season with the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese Central League. He suffered a right hamstring strain and sprained right knee that sidelined him over a month with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2000.

In 1998, on the day his father was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame, Perez suffered a hip flexor while rounding third base and didn't play a game the rest of the year. In 1995 when he was with the Angels, he underwent surgery in the offseason to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Perez also played the final six weeks of the 1994 Triple-A season with a hernia in his right side. Perez had surgery following the playoffs.

To take Perez's place Tampa Bay has recalled infielder/outfielder Damian Rolls from Durham.
