(Sports Network) - A pair of the baseball's most promising young pitchers take the mound this afternoon as Florida's Josh Beckett faces Colorado's Jason Jennings in the rubber match of a three-game series from Coors Field.
Beckett is coming off defeats to Atlanta, April 17 and last Friday. The 23-year-old righthander and World Series MVP has taken consecutive losses for only the third time in his career. He gave up seven hits and six runs over five innings in his most recent outing.
Pitching on the road has been a struggle for Beckett, as he's 1-6 over his last 10 road games (nine starts). He faced Colorado once before in his career and that came at Coors Field when he picked up a victory by allowing two earned runs over six innings.
Florida lost 13-10 last night, giving up five runs in the eighth inning.
Jeff Conine stroked four hits and Juan Pierre collected three for the Marlins, who have dropped three of their last five. Conine ended with three RBI in the loss. Miguel Cabrera ended 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBI for Florida.
Florida starter Darren Oliver struggled, giving up eight runs on nine hits in four-plus innings. He struck out four, but gave up five homers. Chad Fox (0-1) suffered the loss as he gave up three runs on just one hit, while never recording an out.
Luis Castillo went 2-for-5 and became the first Marlin to record 1,000 hits.
