Quick Injury Update

Postby JGuilbault11 » Tue Apr 07, 2015 2:15 pm

Pitchers:

Garrett Richards

Richards is due to pitch in a minor-league game this Thursday, he could rejoin the Angels rotation sometime next week. Los Angeles is using a four man rotation, so nobody is being dropped out to make room. If slipped in a lot of drafts and will pitch almost a full season.

Chris Sale

Sale has been rehabbing that fractured foot in Arizona while his team headed to Kansas City. He threw five innings in a minor-league game, allowing one run and striking out seven. April 12th has been the rumored date that he makes his 2015 debut.

Hyun-Jin Ryu

Ryu looks like he will need a little extra time, he just started a throwing program today. There is no structural damage to his shoulder, but this is the same injury that caused him to miss some time last season. He will be re-evaluated in ten days, but end of April is an optimistic return date for Ryu.

Alex Cobb

News came out of Tampa today that Cobb was making slow progress in getting over forearm tendinitis. There is no timetable and with Smyly dealing with tendinitis in his shoulder, Rays will lean on Nathan Karns and Erasmo Ramirez. Karns is not worth a pickup just yet with his inexperience, Ramirez could be a spot starter in some leagues.

Drew Smyly

Smyly threw some batting practice to test the shoulder, and is looking to build on that progress by throwing a game in the minors. End of April is the possible return date, and look for him to be back before Cobb.

Joe Kelly

Kelly will either start in New York this weekend, or take one extra week to recover from a bicep strain. Steven Wright is going to make a spot start if Kelly needs another week. Not sure how many Joe Kelly owners are out there, but he will be back soon.

Homer Bailey

The Reds have set April 17th-19th as a possible return date for Bailey. He will make a minor-league start on Sunday, and hope to rejoin the rotation after that. Everything has pointed to a full recovery from his offseason forearm surgery.

Justin Verlander

For those waiting for that rebound season from Verlander, he is not on the DL from what earlier reports have said. It is very possible he pitches this Sunday vs. Cleveland. He is going to face some hitters in the minors on Tuesday, which should give an indication on whether he starts Sunday or not.

Sean Doolittle

Fantasy owners should be able to hold onto Tyler Clippard until about mid-May, that is the timetable for Doolittle to return. With a rotator cuff tear, you may want to keep Clippard in the wings even when Doolittle returns.

Kenley Jansen

Jansen is still in a walking boot after foot surgery, even though he was scheduled to have it removed a week ago. The Dodgers are still unsure if this is a setback or not. Chris Hatcher got the save for L.A. today, earning his first career save. It could be a closer by committee until he gets back.

Koji Uehara

It is just a mild hamstring strain for Koji, Edward Mujica will take the role of closer for the next week or two. Uehara is throwing simulated games, and could be back by the home opener next week. For some quick saves get Mujica until Koji returns.

Infield:

Anthony Rendon

The Nationals are going to be very careful with Rendon, he is at the least a few weeks away from returning to the lineup. It will be a week to week update with him going forward. Yunel Escobar took over for him at third base today, while Dan Uggla manned second. Escobar is going to be an everyday starter anyway, but shifted over to third. He is the man to pick up in deep leagues, due to him being second in the order. He is less than 2% owned in both Yahoo and ESPN leagues.

J.J. Hardy

Hardy will be out for about ten days or so, nothing serious, just a shoulder strain. Everth Cabrera is expected to fill in, but chances are you do not need a shortstop this early.

Matt Wieters

It looks like lingering tiredness and tendinitis after the Tommy John surgery for Wieters. He is getting extra reps in and taking April almost as another spring training. If all goes well he should be back by mid-May at the latest.

Outfield:

Coco Crisp

This is a tough break for A’s fans, and Crisp fantasy owners. He had successful elbow surgery and could be back late-May at the earliest. Sam Fuld and Craig Gentry will see a lot of time now with Josh Reddick also missing. Once he returns they will split the center field job.

Josh Reddick

Reddick is dealing with a right oblique strain, but is progressing nicely. He is scheduled to come off the DL this weekend, this will add another outfielder to that crowded roster.

Jayson Werth

Recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, Werth will spend a few games in the minors to get himself ready for activation. Tyler Moore will fill in for a handful of games till his return.

Denard Span

Span will need a little longer recovery time with his offseason abdominal surgery. He told Span it should be three weeks till his return, but that is to be taken with a grain of salt. Michael Johnson is an interesting plug and play for the meantime.

Hunter Pence

Good news for Pence owners, he had his cast removed this weekend. He is still about two weeks away from training, he should be back in May. Gregor Blanco will fill in the outfield for the meantime.
