WOW: Kimbrel/BJ Upton to San Diego

Many reporting, but this was first, I believe..

Kiley McDaniel ‏@kileymcd 4s4 seconds ago: So, as best I understand it now, ATL sends Kimbrel and BJ Upton to SD for Carlos Quentin, Cameron Maybin, Matt Wisler and Jordan Paroubeck

Better for Kimbrel I think. better team, park. But Benoit owners won't be pleased....

He seems to be next in line, but Jim Johnson also there, right? If anyone, my $ would be on Grilli.

I wouldn't count on either of those guys being 'the guy' all season. Yes, they've closed games before, but it wouldn't shock me for Atlanta to look to a younger arm to give a crack at finishing games as they rebuild. For right now, though, I'd think Grilli is the guy to own.

The Braves are certainly committed to this rebuild. Unfortunately, they've given up a lot of talented major-leaguers for nonimpact prospects. I don't think one guy they've acquired has star potential, and the best you can hope for a lot of them is that they become solid regulars to supplement Freddie Freeman and whatever two or three stars they think they can lure to Atlanta in the future (probably going to be OFs at this point).

The Braves' 11 top 2015 salaries: Uggla, Markakis, Freeman, Quentin, Maybin, C.Johnson, Minor, Cahill, Gomes, A.Simmons, Callaspo. Bravo, guys. Well done. At least you're not paying Melvin Upton Jr.

Current Future
C Christian Bethancourt Christian Bethancourt
1B Freddie Freeman Freddie Freeman
2B Jace Peterson Jose Peraza
SS Andrelton Simmons Andrelton Simmons
3B Chris Johnson Rio Ruiz
LF Johnny Gomes/Eric Young Dian Toscano
CF Cameron Maybin Mallex Smith
RF Nick Markakis Nick Markakis

SP1 Julio Teheran Julio Teheran
SP2 Alex Wood Alex Wood
SP3 Mike Minor Shelby Miller
SP4 Shelby Miller Matt Wisler
SP5 Trevor Cahill Lucas Sims
CL Jason Grilli Mike Foltynewicz
LSU Luis Avilan Manny Banuelos
RSU Jim Johnson Shae Simmons

They've built up solid starting-pitching depth in the minors as well (Folty, T.Jenkins, Hursh, Fried, Banuelos, etc.) but you need to have depth at the minor-league level as you can't count on a high percentage of them turning into healthy, reliable starters. Also I'm not sure that Folty or Manny are SPs longterm -- hence me sticking them with Simmons to form the nucleus of the bullpen.

The Markakis contract is more puzzling.

Also, Maurer and Quack to AAA is funny.

The Markakis contract was puzzling when it happened. As it stands now, it's the thing that makes the least sense about this offseason. He's exactly the kind of asset the Braves are unloading left and right.
