My Best Friend Says I Draft Like A Hipster

Postby FindingTim » Sat Apr 04, 2015 8:26 pm

12-team H2H Categories league (ESPN)
OBP instead of batting average/ Quality Starts instead of wins
4th overall pick

C. Travis d'Arnaud (this years "Rendon" imo)
1B. Miguel Cabrera
2B. Howie Kendrick
3B. Josh Donaldson
SS. Jean Segura
MI. Marcus Semien
CI. Nolan Arenado
OF. Mookie Betts
OF. Jorge Soler
OF. J.D. Martinez
OF. A.J. Pollock
OF. Steve Pearce
UTIL. David Wright

Bench C.J. Cron

P Chris Sale
P Johnny Cueto
P Matt Harvey
P Jake Arrieta
P Andrew Cashner
P Tyler Clippard
P Hyun-Jin Ryu
P Matt Shoemaker
P Yusmeiro Petit
P James Paxton
P Carlos Rodon

I'd like some outside perspective.

Personally I think my pitching is great, but I screwed up by only drafting one closer (Clippard, whose role is temporary). I was counting on drafting Brad Boxberger but he got sniped.

My plan was to draft hitters in five of the first six rounds-- but when Cueto fell to early round 4 I couldn't resist. It's like Mike Tyson says, "everyone has a plan until they get punched".

As for the offense, I'm a lot more sold on Cabrera than most people-- hence passing on Goldschmidt. However the outfield scares me. Mookie is my #1 outfielder... that's putting way too much faith in Mookie (although I have high expectations for J.D./Pollock/Soler/Pearce.

Thoughts? Am I relying way too much on "potential" rather than proven results?

thanks

Your starting pitching is excellent, there is no doubt about that. The bullpen is a question mark, may have to get lucky on the waiver wire or make a deal. Hyun-Jin Ryu seems like a ticking time bomb injury wise, maybe you can turn him into some saves via trade. You are relying on a lot of potential, but top class potential. I have maybe 2-3 of those potential guys on each one of my fantasy teams, you are all in for sure. I think you will be just fine, I really like the team I am high on a lot of those guys as well.

Haha! Funny analogy, "drafting like a hipster." Yes your roster is laden with names you read on all the sleeper pages like Betts, Soler, Semien, Arenado, d'Arnaud, Pearce, Pollock, Arrieta, Paxton, Rodon, etc. Although they are predicted to outperform their ADP, it's a total wait and see, so I can see why your buddy said you draft like a hipster :) My advice is to grab an IPA and a kale salad and see how the season pans out.

to be fair, he actually called me a "fantasy hipster" after last years draft. I vowed to draft more proven players this year, instead of hyped youngsters.
But as you can see, I am weak.
