San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - San Francisco Giants rightfielder Jeffrey Hammonds was activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, just over a month after suffering a fractured right thumb.
"I'm ready," said Hammonds, who will bolster the bench and give manager Felipe Alou more flexibility in the outfield.
Hammonds, who was released by the Brewers last June, was hit by a pitch during a spring training game when he suffered the injury.
After being released by Milwaukee, the right-handed hitter was signed by the Giants and hit .277 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 36 games. For his career, which began in 1992 with Baltimore, Hammonds owns a .274 batting average with 107 homers and 419 RBI.
Hammonds has also spent time with Cincinnati and Colorado.
Also Saturday, the Giants designated relief pitcher Leo Estrella for assignment. In another move, the Giants activated first baseman Lance Niekro off the disabled list and optioned him to Fresno.
