Did I pay too much for Scherzer? WHIR

Postby chrisdubyuh » Wed Mar 26, 2014 7:51 pm

I wanted to grab another ace for my staff, another owner needed RP, and the offer I proposed was accepted.

I gave: Upton/A. Gonzalez/Robertson

I got: Scherzer/Napoli/Rasmus

I feel like the only thing I've really lost is AVG going from Upton/AGon to Napoli/Rasmus, and now I have another power arm to fill out my SP. What say you?

In a vacuum, i think he might have gotten the slightly better side of that trade.
AGone > Napoli
J Upton >> Rasmus
Scherzer >> Robertson

However you did need another top SP, so I understand why you did this trade.

Most of the time in order to get the best player in the trade, you must trade 2 really good players. Upton+Robertson should have been enough to get Scherzer IMO, but including A-Gon was too much. You should have asked for a young upside player to go along with Scherzer and it would have been more even. Napoli might give you the same HR's and same RBI's compared to A-Gon, but A-Gon will have much better AVG and more RUNS. Napoli is okay I guess, I just would have asked for a better young player.

I think you may have slightly overpaid, but it's not awful. If Scherzer ends up being the ace we all expect him to be then I'm sure you'll be glad you did this trade.

Stats include: R - HR - RBI - AVG - OBP - SLG - OPS

Player A // 57 - 22 - 66 - .276 - .338 - .501 - .840

Player B // 94 - 27 - 70 - .263 - .354 - .464 - .818

Player C // 79 - 23 - 92 - .259 - .360 - .482 - .842

Player D // 69 - 22 - 100 - .293 - .342 - .461 - .803

--------------------------------------------------------------

Granted, these are 2013 statistics -- I just wanted to paint a clearer picture. Player A is Colby Rasmus, Player B is Justin Upton, Player C is Mike Napoli, and Player D is Adrian Gonzalez. Like I said, aside from AVG and maybe a few R's, I think I'll be ok.

You probably slightly overpaid, but I'm not against overpaying if you A) get the best player in the deal, B) get what you want, and C) fill a need. I think you did all 3 so I have no problems with this trade. Good luck!

I think you overpaid. But if you got what you wanted that's all that matters. Not a big believer in Napoli or Rasmus. So it's a bit of a 3-1 in my book. But your staff really did need a upgrade so I hope it works out for you.

I agree that you may have slightly overpaid but only slightly. The deal does not look that bad to me, all things considered.

Thank you for the help with mine.

I'm a little too high on Upton and A.Gone this year to truly weigh in on this, but this deal isn't bad given your situation. Your OF is stacked so Upton was expendable, in an open perspective the hit from a.gone to Napoli isn't terrible either. You get your 2nd ace and a potential difference maker if Rasmus can pull it together.

Overall, I'm with the consensus: You overpaid a bit. But not a bad deal for you either.

I am no fan of Upton, so imo you got an OK return out of it. It would have been better to not have included Robertson\Rasmus in the deal and just paid AGon and Upton for Scherzer and Napoli or worked out some other secondary players but given your situation you can live with this.
