Post Draft Trade, WHIR

Postby WhoDatRebs » Tue Mar 18, 2014 1:33 pm

Just finished up my draft last night and was fairly pleased with it for my first serious fantasy baseball draft. Prior to the draft, I traded away Robinson Cano, Josh Hamilton, and my 9th round pick (ended up being Tim Hudson) for Stephen Strasburg, Matt Kemp, and his 2nd round pick (ended up being Martin Prado). My keepers going into the draft were: Ellsbury, Kemp, Molina, Trumbo, Strasburg, Cole, Cobb, Wheeler, Romo. I figured after the draft last night, I was done with trades until at least the season started. I woke up to a trade this morning that I find interesting (the guy has M. Cabrera, Cutch and Trout and obviously needs SP). Here's the trade:

Option 1:
I give:

Jacoby Ellsbury
Alex Cobb
Addison Reed

I get:

Miguel Cabrera

It's a 14 team, ESPN roto league. Categories are: Bat: Avg, R, SB, OBP, HR, RBI, SLG. Pitch: ERA, WHIP, SV, K/9, K, W, QS I really don't know if I want to give up Reed, which would leave me with very weak RP. So I thought of countering with this:

[b]Option 2:
I give:

Jacoby Ellsbury
Alex Cobb

I get:

Andrew McCutchen

So what would you do? Go with option 1 and be screwed at RP, try and counter with Option 2 and see if he bites, or stay with my current team? Would my starting pitching still be okay without Cobb? My team is below, bolded players are starters. Thanks.

C- Yadier Molina
1B- Mark Trumbo
2B- Martin Prado
SS- Alexei Rameriez (Will probably move Bogearts here when he is eligible)
3B- Kyle Seager
OF- Jacoby Ellsbury
OF- Matt Kemp
OF- Michael Cuddyer
Util- Xander Bogaerts
Util- Anthony Rendon

Bench:

OF- Nick Markakis
1B- Justin Smoak
2B- Omar Infante
OF- Eric Young Jr.
OF- Josh Reddick

Pitchers:

P- Stephen Strasburg
P- Gerritt Cole
P- Alex Cobb
P- Yovani Gallardo
SP- Zach Wheeler
SP- Wade Miley
RP- Sergio Romo
RP- Addison Reed

Bench:
RP- Darren O'Day

I like the first option but agree with the RP issues. If you want to throw RP I would do it. Or just remove Reed from the deal and find something else he likes that you can afford to trade. I can't see him doing the 2nd option. The first trade leaves you really weak in the OF though. I don't have much hope for Kemp. If he's willing to trade Miggy I would kick the tires on Trout. He would fit your team needs better.

I like the first trade, since you can move Prado or Trumbo to "OF" to fill in for Ellsbury. Wouldn't be to upset on losing Reed, just be prepared to pounce on a closers, they pop up every season.

Don't mind the second one, either, but really the difference between Ellsbury and Cutch isn't worth losing Cobb for, even tho I am the biggest Cutch fan here. :-D

Your first option is the best here, Miggy is a huge pick up especially in a Roto league, and as someone said above. don't really worry about closers that much, a closer on some team will pop up out of nowhere and will end up a top 15 closer in the league. it happens every year. (Grille last year) just keep a very close eye on RP.

What relief pitcher are in the FA?

Top RPs in Free Agency are:

Heath Bell
Brian Wilson
Zach Miner
David Huff
Guillermo Moscoso
Francisco Rodriguez
Ryan Braun
Brad Ziegler
JJ Putz

So if the consensus is I can find another RP (although probably not one that will save 40 games like Reed), is giving up the upsides of Cobb and Ellsbury worth getting Cabrera? Being new to fantasy baseball, I obviously know how big an impact Cabrera can have on a team, but I don't know how much is too much to give up for him. I also know that Cobb has a lot of upside, especially in years to come (although we are doing a complete re-draft after next season). By the way, this trade is with the 2-time defending league champion, so it could have a big impact on the entire league.

The mccutchen deal is ok. Not bad. But the Cabrera deal is an easy yes

I would go Cabrera and watch waivers for a closer.

Take Miggy! I'm surprised Reed has any trade value with how volatile the closer position is.

I'm thinking of trying to get him to throw Yordano Ventura or Avisail Garcia into the deal (or at least someone else in addition to Cabrera) and doing the deal. Here is his additional roster, any suggestions on who to add in addition to Cabrera in a counter offer?

C- Willin Rosario
1B- Yonder Alonso
2B- Matt Carpenter
3B- Miguel Cabrera
SS- Andrelton Simmons
OF- Mike Trout
OF- Andrew McCutchen
OF- Avisail Garcia
Util- Nolan Arenado
Util- George Springer
Bench:
Melky Cabrera,
Rickie Weeks
Javier Baez
Chris Owings
Gregory Polanco

Pitchers:
P- Ivan Nova
P- Chris Archer
P- Yordano Ventura
P- Scott Kazmir
SP- Johnny Cueto
SP- Tony Cingrani
RP- Craig Kimbrel
RP- Ernesto Frieri
Bench:
Hector Santiago
