Help me with draft strategy!(WHIR)

Postby kidsilk » Wed Mar 12, 2014 3:39 pm

13 team, 23 man rosters, NL ONLY, 5x5 Roto, 9 keepers per year, auction with 260 dollar cap

I am in the rebuilding mode and don't really think I can win this year but would like to come in the top half of the league. I am going into the draft with 145 dollars to draft 14 players which isn't too great. My one thought is to just punt saves and spend my extra 20-30 dollars that I would spend on a top tier closer on some young good OF and SP. Thoughts on this strategy first since I don't expect to compete this year for the title? Also, take a look at my team and the players available and tell me who you think I should target as my big most important pieces. I was thinking first base or CI should be my big priority since there aren't too many top tier players available then OF.

Here are my Keepers:

I don't think i would punt anything.
Maybe go real cheap on a low end closer.
I would target 1B for sure, and OF.

No need to punt saves; pay attention to the potential closer battles. Putz/Reed in Arizona is one and probably Veras/Strop in Chicago.

I would still look to bid on the best bats available for now and the future.

Do you think I can afford to spend 30+ on Feeman, Stanton or Upton, then around 20 on a closer and 15 on Baez? If I did that I would have 50 dollars left for 9 players. Thoughts?

I agree, don't pay high in your case. Spread the wealth, but focus on 1b and closer, then OF and SP. If you can spread the wealth at catcher, then bundle it in with your closer choice.

I would target Freeman and Pence got 1B and OF. Then I would see if you can get discounts on guys like Hamels and Street. I wouldn't touch any Upton. Well maybe Kate :-D.

help on mine?

I know you can't predict anything for an auction but I am aiming to get Freeman anywhere from 30-35 bucks, then target Baez at SS (you think I can get him for around 15?), Ache or Franco at CI for around 10 bucks hopefully, a closer for around 20-25 (closers go for big time money in my league) unless I go for Reed or Putz and get a discount since who is closing might be up in the air, and then a couple of 10-15 dollar OF like Marisnick or Polanco. Then I will have about 45 dollars to fill in my pitching staff maybe grab a couple of 10 dollar starters and then fill int he rest with 1-5 dollar starters. What do you guys think?
