middle relievers for K's

Postby SpecialFNK » Tue Feb 18, 2014 8:32 pm

there are some middle relievers that can be really useful for K's.
maybe more so in a deeper league.

who are some of the top middle relievers for K's? (non closers).

how much does it hurt (if any) to have a pitcher with a high K/9, but have a high ERA/WHIP?
for example, Al Alburquerque. in 2013 he had 12.86 K/9, but 4.59 ERA and 1.49 WHIP.

Cody Allen is very solid because not only will he rack up the k's he has a chance to close.

Look out for Kevin Siegrist this year. He has some soreness right now which is never a good thing, but if that gets under control he'll set up for the Cardinals and his pretty amazing stuff. 50 k's in 39 IP after joining the team in June which makes him a sneaky play as the average owner just looking at straight k's will overlook him.

Steve Delabar threw gas last year so he's another option.

Jason Motte could also be a good source of K's on the Cardinals.

I came up with this list mostly for my leagues that count holds (or Sv+Hld), but these are almost all high K/low ratio RP's:

Feliz
Benoit
Melancon
Brothers
Martinez
Farquhar
Allen
Peralta
Hochevar
Delebar
McGee
Clippard
Kelley
Tazawa
Siegrist
Cook
Crain
Strop

A lot of them are also fairly likely to end up with some saves this year as well.

I try and find the best middle relievers to fill my P slots every year that aren't already filled by closers. Every year I finish toward the top in K's ERA, and WHIP, but I usually struggle in the wins category. It's a good trade off I think. Very helpful in 3 categories but hurt overall in just one category. Every year new guys come out and post great ERA, WHIP, and K/9. Just look for them and pick them up when you see them.

This is mostly for roto leagues.
