That said, I like Archer the least of this group. His K rate and BB rate are both worse than Estrada's, who I admit hasn't pitched to a very good ERA this year -- a slightly unlucky 14.7% HR/FB rate is primarily to blame for that. Archer's strikeout rate is over 2 full K/9 worse than Estrada's and his BB rate is higher. He's been touch to square up well on, but the walks are going to catch up with him sooner or later -- .223 BABIP is too low when his batted ball rates profile him as a .280ish BABIP pitcher.
As for Wood, I love his potential this season as long as he stays in Atlanta's rotation, but it remains to be seen what Atlanta does when Maholm gets back from the DL. My gut tells me that Wood gets the axe (pun intended) when Maholm gets back in the next 7-10 days. Maholm has 237 career appearances, and 236 of them have been starts. That doesn't mean he can't pitch out of the bullpen, but I have a hard time imagining Atlanta bumping a healthy Maholm from the rotation. Wood seems like a better bullpen arm anyway. I think he should be in the rotation, but I don't run the Braves.
Wood is the best when they're all in the rotation and then Estrada over Archer, but Wood probably won't be starting much longer, so he's the one you have to drop by default.
