Keeper Trade Thought - Cueto/Rizzo for Encarnacion?

Postby Knights » Fri Aug 09, 2013 10:05 pm

I'm in a 16-team 6x6 H2H keeper league, keeping 6 players each season. Top 6 teams make the playoffs, and I'm currently sitting in 4th place with a 11-game lead on 7th place.

I'm want to try to acquire Edwin Encarnacion. His owner is out of it this season and is acquiring assets for next year... although I have good reason to believe that his owner will be very hesitant to move him.

What are your thoughts if I were to make an offer of Johnny Cueto and Anthony Rizzo for Encarnacion (& maybe Mark Melancon)?

Here's my thinking...
Encarnacion is a power bat that my team could definitely use (Bruce is my only true power hitter). Plus he'll be 1B and 3B eligible next season, which is a huge bonus.

Rizzo obviously would be his replacement 1B. And EE's owner has David Price as his top SP, and just acquired Zack Wheeler presumably as a potential 2nd SP keeper option. Since Cueto is injured he is of no use to me in a playoff push, but I wonder if he might be viewed as a better keeper option to this other owner for next year?

As much as I like Cueto and have a slight preference to keeping 2 SP going into next year, if I can acquire EE then my keepers could be set with Bumgarner, Encarnacion, Pedroia, Hanley, Bruce and Choo (CF eligibility is huge for a productive player).

Also, is it worth trying to get Melancon as a throw-in in case he continues to get save opportunities, or should I just stick with Cueto/Rizzo for Encarnacion in order to not push the envelope too far?

Here's my roster:
C Jonathan Lucroy (Mil - C)
1B Anthony Rizzo (ChC - 1B)
2B Dustin Pedroia (Bos - 2B)

Not even a it. EE is WAY better than Rizzo, and you can find a very good SP that's near Cueto in next year's draft. In keeper leagues, always consolidate to higher-end talent. New near-elite talent crops up out of nowhere every season, but production like what EE can provide doesn't usually just appear (Chris Davis aside). Well make the offer but I doubt it's accepted but bully for you if he does. ;-D

The way I see it from the other owners perspective is the trade is essentially Rizzo for Edwin since if he doesn't make the trade he'll get to keep Edwin and have a shot at Cueto in the draft since he won't be one of your keepers.

If I'm him I'd be looking for an overpay for Edwin like Rizzo and another of you other 5 projected keepers otherwise I'm standing pat in 7th place with Edwin still on my team.
