Shields for Upton?

Postby Knights » Wed Mar 06, 2013 12:59 am

16-team 6x6 H2H keeper league (keep 6)

I've been shopping James Shields to try to acquire a keeper in the OF, and I've been preferably hoping to get a power hitter at that. So far unsuccessful though.

I've just been floated the idea of James Shields for BJ Upton.

Upton isn't necessarily the bonafide power hitter I've been looking for, but he should be reliable for good numbers in R, HR (15-20 safe to bank on?), RBI and SB... however he's kind of a detriment to AVG and OPS. Given his fairly well-rounded stat line though, does he meet the needs for my roster? Would he make for a good keeper acquisition in a trade for Shields?

UPDATE: I now just need to work out draft picks going each way to compliment the deal. We have 22-man rosters, so given that we keep 6 there are 16 rounds to our draft and an even number of picks have to go each way in trade. What round of picks should I include in the deal to make this happen?

Here's my end-of-2012 roster (current keeper picks indicated by *):
C Jonathan Lucroy
1B Anthony Rizzo *
2B Dustin Pedroia *
3B Brett Lawrie *
SS/3B Hanley Ramirez *
LF/RF Matt Joyce
CF/RF Carlos Beltran
1B Kendrys Morales
C Russell Martin
2B/SS Josh Rutledge

SP James Shields *
SP Johnny Cueto *
SP Mike Minor
SP Jaime Garcia
SP Homer Bailey
SP Matt Garza
SP Tyler Skaggs
SP Andrew Cashner
SP Brandon Beachy
SP Michael Pineada
SP Chris Carpenter
RP Joel Hanrahan
RP Tom Wilhelmsen
RP Brandon League

I would do that, get a bat when you can. I am not sold on another great yr by Shields.

Thanks for the response. Any other thoughts from the morning crew?

I'm hoping to lock down this deal today, as I feel like it's a good one. I've already sent a message back to the other owner to confirm details but wouldn't mind a few more opinions before the deal is finalized.

I'd make that deal for Upton.

I had a feeling the straight-up deal didn't seem right. I do need to negotiate some draft picks into an offer to proceed with this trade.

I have already traded away my 6th round pick, but I have 2 picks in the 10th round. In our league you must trade an even-number of picks in any deal.

So new question is... what round of picks should I offer and ask for in return to make this deal happen?

In a 16 team league offering a 10th and Shields for BJ Upton and a 21st round pick is fair IMO. If I was you I would offer a 12th first just to see what he says, but ultimately if you have to give up a 10th to make the deal happen I would be okay with that too. Especially in a 16 team league.

Should've mentioned... we have 22 player rosters.

So with 6 keepers, that means we only have 16 rounds of drafting.

I would definitely pull the trigger on this trade and quick! Upton will score a lot of runs in that Braves lineup. I also see him having 25+ home runs again this year. I believe playing around his brother can ultimately make him a better player so I would for sure give up shields for him.
