2013 CLOSERS THREAD

Re: 2013 CLOSERS THREAD

am I missing something?
Pestano started the 9th inning, with the Indians leading 5-1. that's a 4 run lead. Paul hit a HR to make it 5-2. so how did Pestano get a save, when he started the inning with a 4 run lead? I thought a save was 3 run lead or less.

He got the last out with a 3 run lead...doesn't matter what it starts out being...it's what the score is when the final out is made....yeah stupid.

is this a new rule? cassey janssen had a similar situation last week where he gave up 2 runs in the 9th to TB (score was 7-3, ended at 7-5) and he did not get the save even though they won 7-5

That's not a save. Yahoo has it temporarily wrong. You can't earn a save if you entered with bases empty and more than a three run lead.

Yahoo has Pestano getting a save but it was not a save opportunity when he entered the game with a 4 run lead.
Accordingly, Pestano definitely does not get a save. Yahoo is wrong.

yahoo has it wrong, and I have to imagine it will be changed.
both ESPN.com and MLB.com don't have Pestano with a save.

Current Rule

A relief pitcher is awarded a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
He is not the winning pitcher; and
He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
He enters the game, regardless of the score, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat, or on deck; or
He pitches for at least three innings. (The word "effectively" has been removed from the MLB rules.)

Under the last condition, the official scorer has some discretion as to whether or not to award a save. This is rule 10.20 of the Major League Rules.

No more than one save may be credited in each game.

yeah, my bad...if someone else came in after he gave up that run then it would have been a save situation for that person. Ignore me.
