Lots of bullpen talk in today's Cafe Pod:

I said Joe Smith in Cleveland, but that was without the benefit of any info from connected writers and sources -- just a guess on my part. Could be anybody.

We also discussed the Brewers, Marlins, Rockies and Rays.

Pestano will get first crack at it, according to Francona.

Just my prediction but Vinnie is going to hurt those who take him more than help. He's not whole right now. Going with Pestano allows the bridge guys to stay in their roles. But heads up....and it won't take much.

Not a save situation, but O'Day just threw a perfect 9th for the Orioles in a 6-2 win over the Nats. I remain confident that he's a good speculative add.

Valverde does not look good. I see that he's getting K's but he can't miss bats on pitches in the zone. He relies on people chasing bad pitches and eventually they're gonna stop doing that. The walks will become too much and he'll have to start throwing in the zone and he'll get pounded. He's walking a very fine line that is propped up by an insane BABIP of 0.080, and he is even more hittable than last year. I would swap him for a more reliable closer of equal apparent value. Shouldn't be too hard to do given how good most of his peripherals have been so far.

I own Reed/Valverde, along with Jansen/Gregerson/Tazawa/Allen. (16 team league). needing HR I've been shopping around Reed thinking/assuming Valverde was going to be money the rest of the season for a contending Tigers team.
maybe I should be shopping Valverde instead.
I haven't watched Valverde, and only now checked out his fangraphs. 0.80 is an awfully low BABIP.
