2013 CLOSERS THREAD

Re: 2013 CLOSERS THREAD

Cody Allen got the save when both Perez and Pestano were down, and he's been the best arm out there all season. Pestano has velocity issues of his own, and Smith took the BS today, albeit to one batter. If I'm rollin the dice, I go Allen. He's got the best "stuff" in the pen and Smith is iffy against lefties.

I was thinking between Smith or Shaw to replace Perez.
I would think Smith. his numbers are better, and he has more holds. more holds would mean that pitcher was used more before Perez?

the more I look, it looks like Allen has been better. Smith hasn't been as good in May, and same with Shaw.
but it could be any of the 3 really.

I'd go with Allen. He's been by far their best reliever over the past month. Wouldn't be surprised if it was Smith, either. Figures that when Chris Perez gets hurt Pestano is in the middle of pretty much his only bout of suckitude over the past 3 years. Watched him yesterday and he just couldn't throw strikes. The wind didn't help with the fielders missing 2 routine fly balls but he still couldn't find the zone.

Yikes. What a week for closers.

I have no idea who to pick up in CLE.

most I read on twitter think it would be Shaw in the 9th instead of Allen.
Allen might have the best numbers of the 3, but would it matter that he is the least experienced?

does it make a different in how Shaw has been used in May? I look and see he has had multiple games in May where he has gone more than 1 inning. maybe you would replace the closer with the pitcher who is used to going 1 inning?

just some information.

most of Bryan Shaw's innings have come in the 7th inning.
7th- 11.2 IP - 0.77 ERA, 5 BB, 8 K.
8th- 5.1 IP, 5.06 ERA, 1 BB, 5 K.
9th- 1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 BB, 3 K

Cody Allen has similar innings in 6th, 7th, and 8th.
6th- 5.2 IP, 1.59 ERA. 3 BB, 8 K.
7th- 5.2 IP, 3.18 ERA, 3 BB, 6 K.
8th- 5.1 IP, 3.38 ERA, 0 BB, 8 K.
9th- 2.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0 BB, 1 K.

personally I added Allen. even if he isn't closing right away, he still has elite K's. if Shaw is given the 1st opportunity, I'm not sure he holds onto that with how he has pitched in May. in May he has 14 IP and 14 hits allowed.

splits have not favored Shaw. Might be prone to LHB. FWIW, Gammons says Shaw may get first shot, but Allen's "stuff" is better.

Who are you taking out of Peralta, O'Day in Baltimore, or someone in the Cleveland situation?

I think JJ has a leash in BAL. I'd take Peralta right now. You could take a chance on someone in Cleveland, but there is no clear indication who will it be at this point.

If you only have room for one, I would go Shaw. Allen, Smith and Pestano I would rank fairly even, but I like Shaw's chances the best.
