2013 CLOSERS THREAD

League, Jansen.
Jansen, League.
League, Jansen.

When asked prior to Tuesday's game who his closer is, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly replied, "I don't know. We'll see."
Kenley Jansen seemed to be close to overtaking Brandon League for the job, but he then allowed two runs in back-to-back games over the weekend. Mattingly indicated that he'd like to use League in the role, saying he'd "really like to see the bullpen get its confidence back and some semblance of order and get the guys in the roles we designed." Jansen has out-pitched League all season until the last few days and is probably the favorite for the job over the long run. The situation is a headache for fantasy owners.

the Marlins going with "everybody" and the Dodgers are going with "we'll see".

Qualls should be a pickup in every league right now

Qualls is the type of pitcher I would personally rather avoid. maybe I would/could pick him up and hope to flip him to someone else desperate for saves. but I myself wouldn't want to be counting on Qualls to help my team. I think he could do more damage than good.
the Marlins aren't going to win many games, so save opportunities are going to be limited. but he is still going to pitch in his share of games.
his K/9 is OK at 7.27 K/9. but it was only 4.64 last year, and 5.21 in 2011. I don't know if I would trust that average K/9 to continue. just for K purposes there are likely many more relievers I would rather have that would be available in most leagues.
his BB is good at 2.08 BB/9, but he does give up too many hits, 16 in 17.1 IP.
if the Marlins had said Qualls was THE closer then it would make him a little more valuable to pick up, but even on a Marlins team that isn't going to win much, he is only one of the multiple options available.

Betancourt pulled with an undisclosed injury. They had him throw a few pitches, and it didnt look like an arm issue. stay tuned, and pick up Rex Brothers as insurance.

THanks. Came to post the same thing, but didn't know who the backup would be.

Dropped Cishek for O'Day. Hope it ends up being the right move. We have shallow rosters in a 14 team roto league, so I couldn't have both. Dropped Fujikawa for Rex Brothers per the above recommendation (thanks!)

Looks like a groin injury for Betancourt, not sure he will go on DL yet.

When I get a groin injury (from running), I nurse the crap out of it. I'm betting he goes on the DL.

no DL for Rafael.
Rafael Betancourt (groin) will not require a trip to the disabled list.
Betancourt left Tuesday's game with a tight right groin, but it's merely some scar tissue from a previous injury. He was given anti-inflammatory medication and could be back in there as soon as Friday. Rex Brothers and Wilton Lopez could be in the mix for save chances until he's ready to go, but it doesn't sound like he'll have a lengthy absence.
