2013 CLOSERS THREAD

Welp. Bad news for Putz owners. Per Rotoworld...
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that "all signs point" to J.J. Putz needing major elbow surgery.
Olney says that, even if the Diamondbacks opt for rest and rehab, Putz will be "out a long time." The D'Backs will go with Heath Bell as their closer for now, but David Hernandez is a better pitcher and could easily find himself in the ninth inning before long.

Any speculation on if League is close to losing the job? He's given up runs in all but 3 of his last 10 appearances. He's managed to only blow one game in that time though, but has two losses in his last 2. Worth grabbing Jansen right now? I could see them placing League on the DL with some BS injury if he stinks again and Jansen holding it down.

Manager Don Mattingly said on a potential closer switch of Kenley Jansen and Brandon League, “I’m still thinking about it.”

this from rotoworld.
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday that he's considering mixing up the closer role, but don't want to mess up the bullpen, "not that we're not a mess already a little bit."
Brandon League has blown just one save in nine chances but has a 5.40 ERA and 1.28 WHIP, while Kenley Jansen boasts a 2.12 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Jansen also has a 21/5 K/BB ratio compared to a 7/4 ratio for League. While it doesn't sound like the skipper is ready to make a change yet, one could come before long.

I hope Jansen gets the job, and rolls with it.

Arizona writer.
@SteveGilbertMLB: Dbacks Bell says he was told he and David Hernandez will pitch 8/9th innings depending on matchups in Putz's absence

if Bell and Hernandez are both RH, what different "matchups" could there be?

If Jansen is available, you should grab him regardless. He should take over eventually and even if he is not the closer, he's worth rostering in standard mixers because of his ratios and strikeouts.

From Rotoworld:

The Red Sox have sent the MRI on Joel Hanrahan's forearm to specialists Dr. James Andrews and Dr. David Altchek.
Hanrahan is in shutdown mode until the two doctors review the MRI and get back to the team, at which point a rehab scheduled will be formulated. The reliever is expected to be on the shelf for a while.

And also:

Andrew Bailey (biceps) will resume throwing Thursday.
Bailey was placed on the 15-day disabled list earlier this week because of a sore right biceps muscle. He is hoping to be activated as soon as he is eligible.

I'm sure most people are holding onto Bailey and others are understandably adding Tazawa in the short term, but I see this as Bailey's job as long as he can get/stay healthy.

Unless Tazawa dominates.

I think tazawa will hold on to the job if he does well even when Bailey comes back simply because Bailey is injury prone.

It would be insanely stupid for the Dodgers to go with Jansen as the closer over League. But baseball in general misuses the bullpen so I'd expect most teams to waste their best RP in the closer role which is a lower leverage role than the setup one so they probably will end up going that way.

why would it be stupid?
numbers wise Jansen is much better than League. if the 9th inning is where you want you best pitcher to shut down the other team in their final at bat, then Jansen should be closing over League. if League can't get the job done against the other team in their final at bat, then he shouldn't be the last pitcher you want out there to close the game.
if your best pitcher is Jansen and you pitch him to shut down the other team in the 8th, and then League comes in for the 9th only to blow the lead, then you've wasted Jansen in the 8th.
why is the 9th a lower leverage role?

I can understand saying your best bullpen pitcher should be used against the best hitters on the opposing team's lineup, but that may also be in the 9th just as much as it may be in the 8th or even the 7th.
