2013 CLOSERS THREAD

Rondon.
Working on back-to-back days for the first time this spring, Bruce Rondon gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning Wednesday against the Phillies.
Today's poor showing has to be a blow to Rondon's chances of getting save opportunities next month. After throwing a perfect inning Tuesday, he walked two and allowed two hits today. His spring ERA is back up to 5.84.

if not Rondon, who has the next best chance at closing?
last I read they didn't want Benoit closing.
Villarreal? Alburquerque? Dotel? Coke?

Definitely a CBC with Albuquerque your best bet. Add him now if you can.

What's your source on Benoit not being the next man up? Just curious because I own him and want to get the right pitcher.

I don't know a specific site and haven't checked lately, but early in spring training I read the Tigers did not want Benoit to close because he doesn't pitch that good on back to back days, so they didn't want to use him at closer and having to use him on back to back days.

To me Alburquerque is what the Tigers want Rondon to be. He's already had success in the majors. I don't see why he won't get a chance if he's healthy. They've already said they don't want Benoit going back to back.

I think by the third week of April it will be:

Setup: Benoit
Closer: Albequerque

Rondon: Fantasy irrelevant.

Here's Leyland's quote (from late January):

Joaquin Benoit physically, I don't think he can do it. With all due respect to Benoit, he doesn't bounce back.

Still, if they start off the season in committee mode, I don't think it's out of the question that Benoit could seize the job. (Though Albuquerque would be my best guess -- and no more than a guess.)

Is it pretty much expected that Rondon will either be the closer or be sent down? No chance he gets a spot in the bullpen but isn't the closer and instead part of a committee?

To start off the year he will either be in the committee or in middle relief. If he's garbage then he will get sent down. If he is all of a sudden lights out then he could certainly take the job and run with it but never showed the ability to control his walks in the minors and I'm pretty sure Leyland knows he's not ready. They will go CBC but Leyland has said he wants a surefire closer. It will be decided the first two weeks of the season so stash Albequerque now and hope he gets the job.

Any possibility Dotel gets it? He put up some pretty sick K and BB numbers last year.
