he came on with 2 out in the 8th, and then just came back out for the 9th. I wouldn't read too much into it.

"Some fans believe Valverde is a Leyland creation," Leyland says. "They think the manager loves him or he wouldn't be here. I don't understand who they think we should be closing with. I'm asking that question, 'Who the (expletive) should I be closing with?' I mean, do they want some rookie kid? I don't understand that.

"Who the (expletive) should I close with? Who do you want me to close with? Who the (expletive) do you want to be the closer? … I don't know what the (expletive) these people want. They just throw stuff out there. People just talk, they don't think about it."

With a quote like that I think it's safe to say you should keep an eye on Benoit.

what makes you say that?
I think Leyland has already said that Valverde is the closer.

I saw this on twitter. unsure what it exactly means.

Buster Olney just said that Casey Jennsen is starting to interest a lot of team in trade talk. Not sure if it is as a closer, or setup man.

Papelbon.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Phillies believe there are three teams -- Red Sox, Tigers and Cardinals -- with interest in Jonathan Papelbon.
Trading the 32-year-old right-hander would be a nice first step for the Phillies, who badly need to retool their current major league roster and minor league system. Papelbon, who signed a four-year, $50 million free agent contract with Philadelphia in November 2011, has registered a 1.46 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 23/3 K/BB ratio across 24 2/3 innings of relief this season.

I would be surprised if the Cardinals or Red Sox were really interested.

Is it accurate to say Bastardo is a must add in most leagues? I mean just how likely is Papelbon to be traded? I think Bastardo would make a hell of closer & I've been waiting for him to be able to close again. When he filled in for Lidge a couple years ago he was lights out.

Fangraphs has Mike Adams as the first option, Bastardo second. Neither looks like they've been lights out, just from a quick look at season and last 30 day stats. I'm too far removed from the situation to really have any clue who it might be. Anyone closer to the situation care to speculate/give advice on the best pickup here?

I could easily see the Cardinals interested. There's no way shape or form Mujica can keep this up. Getting Papelbon would give them more reliability at the back end, allowing them to move Mujica back to his 7th inning role.

Not a chance. If Mujica falters Rosenthal will close. Cardinals won't take on that contract when they have tons of internal options.

if there was a save chance for the Tigers tonight, I would think it would go to Valverde. but if so Leyland isn't saying right now.

Leyland on who will handle 9th inning tonight: "This is Days of our Lives, boys. We'll find out tonight."

someone got the save tonight for the Tigers, other than Valverde OR Benoit. it was Drew Smyly. the Tigers won 5-1. so wait, what, how did Smyly get the save? he came on for Scherzer to start the 7th and went 3 scoreless innings.
Jim Leyland messing with everyone.
