Fantasy Baseball Panel w/Ron Shandler & Paul White, Pt. 2

Postby jbird669 » Mon Feb 13, 2012 10:57 am

Here's part 2 of my recap.

Allen Craig will miss a month.

Brandon Belt’s PT is dependent upon Aubrey Huff who’s playing for a contract.

Angels will teach Mark Trumbo to play 3B in spring training. Scoscia likes his intelligence and work ethic.

The Angels’ success will hinge on what they do with their excess. Paul said they are looking at Nationals as a trading partner – not sure which player they’re looking to move: Wells, Hunter, Bourjos. I heard all three but it wasn’t clear.

Paul is skeptical of Miguel Cabrera at 3B, he jokingly said the Tigers would be better off with Fielder at 3B. Ron said Brandon Inge and Don Kelly are good reserve list players.

A question came up about the A’s and the trading away of players. Paul said he thinks it’s due to 2 things: if Billy Beane guts the team and makes it so bad, they can go to MLB and get a stadium deal in San Jose. The other thing is Beane is having fun again building from scratch.

Paul says James Shields could be a trade candidate.

The Phillies are content to let Domonic Brown ease his way onto the roster. The Blue Jays, however, want Colby Rasmus to succeed now. They are a bit leery of Colby’s dad however.

Paul says Dodgers could be a sleeper team this year. They have a lot of talent but flaws as well. He said as of right now Guerra and Janssen are 50/50 for save opps.

Ron says he could see Pineda struggling in NY with media pressure. Paul says based on some talks that is a possibility.

Kuroda and Jiminez – 2 pitchers in new places – Ron says tack on ½ run to their ERA and if you had to pick one, take Kuroda. Paul says the Rockies were desperate to unload Jiminez. Paul also said Kuroda loved LA and was firmly entrenched in Japanese-American community out there. He’s testing NY with one year deal to see if he likes it. If not and LA won’t take him back, he may go back to Japan (he was close this time).

Emilio Bonafacio is very valuable for steals and position flexibility.

Ron said Lucas Duda has 20 HR potential. Paul said he’s horribly defensively.

Wandy Rodriguez is a good bet to be traded. Houston will wait for a team to be desperate before pulling trigger. Boston is a possible landing point.

Ron says Ike Davis will be a good value.

This rumor has picked up steam since last week, but AJ Burnett, according to Paul, is most likely headed to Pittsburgh. At first the Yankees wanted D. Jones, (didn’t hear first name) but now it’s a question of how much salary NY will eat. Paul said his problem is he thinks too much and rubbed Yankees management the wrong way. He will be a “flip player” – 3-4 months in Pittsburgh and then he’ll be traded. Ron says if he goes to Pittsburgh, he’s all over him. Think 10-14, 3.75 ERA. A good $3-5 investment.

Ron is concerned about Chris Carpenter’s workload last year.

Paul is a not Hanley Ramirez fan. He saw a lot of things last year that scream disaster and he’s a bum in locker room. Could be traded, especially if Miami signs Cespedes. He said HanRam could grow up to be Alfonso Soriano.

Erik Bedard was highlighted as a “sleeper”/underrated player to consider.

Right now, Bret Lawrie is, a “sexy Placido Polanco” per Ron.

Ron says if healthy Matt Holliday will be great. Paul is worried that Holliday may think he has to be Albert now that Pujols is gone.

Ron says expect regression from Ivan Nova and Desmond Jennings is the real deal.

Ron loves Dexter Fowler’s upside. Paul says he used to be flaky but he works very hard now.

Josh Hamilton came up. Paul said he isn’t worried about relapse. The best gauge of players dealing with this is other players. The Rangers believe in him and the fact that Hamilton owns it and discusses it is a good sign. Paul then said not to dismiss idle gossip of players. For example, he was very interested to know the date Minka Kelly and Derek Jeter broke up. Ron then said he heard there were Matt Kemp/Rihanna sightings.

Paul said Matt Wieters is gonna be good. He said he didn’t get extra BP for 3 months because he was dealing with defensive side of ball. He sees catchers often have 2 year regression due to defense but Wieters is past that.

Ron sees Justin Smoak have slow improvements. Paul said he talks long and slow and those types of players don’t make big leaps.

Lastly, Paul asked Ron what Bryce Harper would be worth if he hit /261, 20 HR and 61 RBIs in his first full season. Ron said $13. Paul then said that’s what Ken Griffey , Jr hit in his first full season.

Lastly, Paul says 5th Wild card could happen this year, they are working on the dates. The holdup is the World Series cannot be pushed back. Fox won’t budge.

Baseball is a game where a curve is an optical illusion, a screwball can be a pitch or a person, stealing is legal and you can spit anywhere you like except in the umpire's eye or on the ball. ~Jim Murray

Thank you for posting this. Very interesting read and even some nuggets I didn't know about. The pirates player was Garret Jones but they don't want to include him.

If Mat Gamel falters in Milwaukee, Paul said Tyler Green will play at first.

This is true for sure and Green is worth picking up in most leagues if it does happen. He is more of an Overbay type of guy but he'll likely bat right in the middle of Braun, Aramis, Hart, Weeks so he should add good R/RBI. He might sit vs LHP though with Hart playing 1B, same issue that Gamel might have if he hits.

You're quite welcome! Fortunately none of my leaguemates visit this site, so I can safely post it.
