Boras always gets a bad rap. He he clearly listened to his client, and got him what he wanted.
Weaver is a Rare Breed: “It’s the way I was brought up,” Jered Weaver said. “If $85 million is not enough to take care of my family and other generations of my family, then you’re stupid. I play baseball for the love of the game, for the competitive part of it.” I’m sure the Baseball Players Association is not happy. And, agent Scott Boras is even less happy. “He knows his value,” Boras said. “He knows not becoming a free agent would cost him millions and millions of dollars. But the necessity to stay home was compelling.”
Sell Low.
Will Porcello Ever Get it Together?: We're now 469 innings into the career of Rick Porcello, and he has a 4.64 ERA. Is there any hope for better in the future? In the triumvirate of pitcher skills -- strikeouts, walks, and ground balls -- Porcello is above-average in two. He has a 2.12 BB/9 this year (3.10 BB/9 is average), and a 49% ground-ball rate (44% is average). We know he doesn't get swinging strikes (6.3%, 8.5% is average) or strikeouts (5.31 K/9, 7.05 is average), but if he does two of the three things that you want out of a pitcher, why hasn't he at least been serviceable in your fantasy league?
How to win at H2H? Pitching, pitching, and more Pitching.
Will Overton: I have two groups of starting pitchers who are available on many waiver wires and could be picked up in your league. The first group are pitchers who should be owned in standard leagues and are relatively trustworthy to use as every game starters. The second group will be guys who you would want to use as spot starters in standard leagues based on matchups and also guys who should be owned and could be owned in deep leagues.
The curse of Barry Bonds.
The Losing Continues for the Pittsburgh Pirates: The Pittsburgh Pirates, owners of 19 straight losing seasons, are headed for two decades worth of misery thanks to an ugly August during which they’ve gone 6-16. Pittsburgh now finds itself in fourth place, 16.5 games back of Milwaukee and just 4.5 games ahead of the fifth-place Cubs. Yes, the Pirates have lost 17 games in the standings in just over five weeks.
Fresh from the cafe press.
Wide World of Waivers:The Angels’ Peter Bourjos has caught fire at just the right time in fantasy leagues. The intriguing power/speed player hit homers in three consecutive three-hit games over the weekend while stealing a couple bags on Thursday and Friday. That gives him eight HRs and 17 SBs on the year with a .285 average
Future Rookies: This week’s Future Rookies share a few common characteristics. The first is that they both play shortstop. The second is that they both recently were promoted a level. The third, and perhaps most interesting similarity, is that they are both Tampa Bay Rays’ prospects!
Just cus i can.
Ellsbury as AL MVP?: Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-5 with a HR, 3 runs, 2 RBI and a SB last night in the Red Sox 13-2 win over the Rangers. Ellsbury is a top candidate for AL MVP, along with teammate Adrian Gonzalez and Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson. Ellsbury is hitting .315-.372-.521 with 23 HRs, 81 RBI, 93 runs and 35 SBs this season. This from a guy who some teammates questioned last year whether he was really injured or not, and there was rumors that he would be traded. Now the Red Sox are in a position to possibly sign him long term.

WARNING: Trotting Holland today.

I wonder for H2H Leagues where the playoffs have already begun, how Hurricane Irene PMSing all over the East Coast this weekend is going to affect outcomes.

I chose to toss holland and Gio out to the wolves. Hopefully I don't regret that but I have a huge lead in the ratios and W/k's are competitive.

Looks like top Giants pitching prospect Eric Surkamp has been called up and will probably start tomorrow. :-L

Gotta say that Capuano's amazing performance came out of nowhere.
