Sizzling Setups: Mike Adams

The name “Mike Adams” is no stranger to baseball geeks. Over 7 Major League seasons, Adams has managed to sustain a minuscule 2.21 ERA and 1.03 WHIP while striking out 9.3 batters per 9 innings pitched. And yet, somehow, he has only 2 career saves to his credit. It’s not that he’s a situational reliever, as he’s been similarly dominant against both right-handed and left-handed batters (His career Batting Average Against Lefties is a mere .196, and Against Righties only .200). He simply has constantly been in the wrong place at the wrong time. During his first 3 seasons, he struggled with injuries as a Milwaukee Brewer and, despite being labeled the team’s “Closer of the Future,” was sent on a journey of trades and waivers in 2006 that eventually brought him to the Sand Diego Padres. He missed all of 2007 to injury, but resumed his growth in 2008, and over the next 3 seasons, managed ERA’s of 2.48, 0.73, and 1.76. Obviously, Petco has had a huge impact on the ERA’s of almost all Padre pitchers, but Adams has actually been an exception to the rule. His home/away ERA splits from 2008-2010 are as follows:
