Report: Mauer signs extension

Postby nsulham » Sun Mar 21, 2010 6:01 pm

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Joe Mauer and the Twins have agreed to an eight-year, $184 million contract extension.
An official announcement is expected tonight, but the deal includes a full no-trade clause for the reigning AL MVP and pays $23 million per season through 2018. The deal took longer than expected to complete, with Twins fans starting to get nervous as Opening Day approached, but ultimately there was never much doubt that the two sides would work something out and the Twins did well by avoiding a 10-year deal that had been speculated about.

8/184 8-o :-L

Good for Joe, good for the Twins, good for Minnesota, good for baseball.

and Yankees fans everywhere scream out loud, NNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!
early in the winter i know there were alot of Yankees fans on sites that i saw say it was a matter of when Mauer would be a Yankee and not if.
i like that Mauer has signed long term with Minnesota, it means another top tier player that wont simply go to one of the big market teams.

I like it ;D I wonder if they announced it with the news of Nathan going for surgery to lighten the blow and keep the news more positive.

That just shows how uneducated in the sport some Yankees fans really are.

It would have made absolutely no sense for the Yankees to add onto what already is an enormous payroll; the Yankees have $144mm committed in 2011 - and that's without Jeter, Rivera, Pettite, Vazquez, half their pen and bench and arbitration salaries for Joba and Hughes. And they have one of the best hitting prospects at catcher already in their system and projected to start in 2011 in Miguel Montero.

It's a good signing for the Twins. I don't think there's any hometown discount built in there; the amount and years sound about what I think Mauer would've gotten in free agency. But it's a fair deal. It makes sense that Carl Pohlad had to die in order for the Twins franchise to live.
0-3 to 4-3. Worst choke in the history of baseball. Enough said.

I'd start teaching him 1b, stat.
If he can play there even a third of the time (pushing Morneau to DH) it'll hopefully keep him fresh.

Wow, that is one hell of a contract.

I guess that means Pujols will be getting at least $25M per... :-°
