Let competitor take *1 seed to playoffs?

Postby kailromanoff » Sun Aug 23, 2009 8:30 pm

Barring a huge slide I have 1 of the 2 buys in a 6 team playoff locked up. I am in a virtual tie for 1st as of now(I think he holds the tie breaker) and the other team is sliding backwards. My strategic question is do I let up a little and give the other team 1st place since it would give me a more favorable matchup after my bye(The 4th place team is on a tear and looks like the best team other than me). Or is it wise to try for 1st since that would give me the playoff tie-breaker(meaning 6-6 weeks would be a win for me).

Obviously I might not get #1 seed, and the #4 team could lose the play-in. But variables aside, is that a smart strategy to make it easier to get to the championship game, hence $$$. Or is it just morally questionable and cheap?

I'd rather take the sure fire thing and make sure I get in, don't let up and go for the W

Well, a sure fire things is not needed because I am in the playoffs. Its just a matter of do I shoot for the top seed or hold up in 2nd in hopes of a better matchup in the semifinals.

Sounds like more of a personal, judgment call. I'd make the decision that you know won't bother you even if it blows up in your face.

Based on the "you gotta beat 'em all to win" theory, I'd try for the playoff tiebreak. I'd say close playoff weeks are the rule rather than an exception for me, so that would be a pretty big deal to have.

Seems like a cop out. I would not do this.

I would try to win as a big as possible every week. When you play H2H, sometimes teams get hot at the right moment and you can't control it - case in point, the #1 seed in our league has not won the championship since 2003. But I would still try to get the #1 seed if I could despite that.
