How bout 2 screw ups and then...

Postby bazzy_51 » Sun Aug 23, 2009 7:08 pm

you become only the 2nd person since 1927 to do this... wow...

Eric Bruntlett replacing Utley on Chase's day of recorded the 2nd unassisted game-ending triple play in MLB History.

Granted allllll the stars lineup perfectly for this to happen, but it still happened, we will rewind to 2 ABs prior to the triple play...

2nd AB of the inning, grounder right to Bruntlett and he punts it, late throw to first runner safe, run scores...
Very next AB grounder up the middle, all Bruntlett needs to do is a half way slide flip to Rollins at 2nd for the for sure out at 2B and a chance at a double play, instead punts that off the heel of his glove...

at this point and time runners on 1st and 2nd no outs, Brad Lidge and his 1.75+ WHIP and 7ish ERA on the mound keep in mind...

next AB in the inning steps up the Mets #4 hitter Frenchy (again no outs) and Manuel for some stupid reason puts both runners in motion on the swing of the bat. Frenchy swings and smokes one dead up the middle at eye level, Bruntlett drifts to his right catches the ball right over the 2nd base bag for one out, steps on 2nd for out #2 and tags Daniel Murphy who is 2 feet from 2B at this point and time for the 3rd out...

all i can say is Manuel what the hell are you thinking?

A. you have Lidge on the mound who has been shaky at best all year
B. your down 2 runs in a 9-7 game with 2 runners on
C. you have one of your biggest bats, and better bats at the dish
D. you send the runners in motion with no outs, knowing that Frenchy takes some hefty cuts, thus risking a strike em out throw em out double play. (he had Castillo on 2nd and Murphy on 1st, neither run good enough to put that play into motion in at that point and time in the game)
E. not only do you risk the double play, but instead you essentially hit your team into a game ending triple play with 2 runners on bottom of 9, down 2 with no outs at that point at time. Worst case there would have been 1 out with Cory Sullivan who had already homered in the game and a vet bat who has a great chance of putting the ball in play in Tatis right behind him.

Seriously it was a sweet deal for Bruntlett to punt not one but TWO balls, then make up for both of those with a bottom of the 9th game ending triple play. but all things considering this guy needs to callup Manuel and thank him for the numerous sportcenter highlights for the rest of the week, and for putting his name as the 15th name in MLB history to turn an unassisted triple play, and only the 2nd to end a game. and we wonder why the Mets are in the situation they are in this year? one word Manuel. btw word from that side of the stats is that Manuel will definitely be back for next year, have fun Met fans!
Great thanks to soto for the sweet sig!...

You know what the craziest part of all of that is.....
C. you have one of your biggest bats, and better bats at the dish

Frenchy really is the best hitter they have right now.....
