Laura Ling, 32, and Euna Lee, 36, were making a television documentary about North Korean refugees for former vice-president Al Gore's Current TV when they were detained on the border between North Korea and China in March.
Last month, a court in Pyongyang sentenced them to 12 years of "reform through labour" for their "grave crime". Miss Ling is reported to have told her sister in a telephone call: "Look, we violated North Korean law and we need our government to help us."
But last night they were due to fly home with Mr Clinton's party after Mr Kim issued a "special pardon" for the pair.
The former US president and the reclusive leader of North Korea engaged in a "wide-ranging exchange of views on matters of common concern", according to North Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, characterised the trip as a "solely private mission".

I've seriously been laughing for the last 15 minutes at the fact that Bill Clinton, America's secret diplomatic weapon, walks in and negotiates their release in just a few hours. It's like he and Hillary were playing good cop/bad cop on North Korea. Al Gore is involved in this, too, it's like a nostalgic blast from the past.
Also, John Bolton is a tremendous [mod edit]. (sorry about the thinkprogress article, can't find the quote anywhere else yet)
