Strasburg's ETA in ESPN leagues

Postby auclairkeithbc » Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:39 am

When do you think he'll hit the database, if at all? Are we going to have to wait until he actually joins the MLB club? Or just till he gets signed, putting him in the same situation as a lot of other minor leaguers that are in the database?

Also, does anyone know about the signing period and when we should expect him to sign?

August 15, and he won't pitch in the majors this season.

I don't think he will pitch this year so I don't think he will be added to the system. I'm sure he can pitch in the bigs, but why would the Nationals want to risk an injury to their 1st pick in a meaningless September game when they are 20 games out of 4th place in the NL East.

According to the AJ Mass' ESPN Fantasy News email on 5/28/2009

Yes, we all assume Strasburg is going to be the first overall pick by the Nationals, but until he signs a professional contract, he's not in the player pool. It's that simple. Just as you shouldn't be able to sign Jake Peavy in an AL-only league today "just in case" he approves a trade to an AL-only team, you can't jump the gun and react to a future event that might not ever come to pass.

So it looks like he should be added by years end, so long as Washington is able to sign him

Hmmm. So in deep keepers you almost have to hold onto the #1 waiver right? Because he is very likely to be signed and as soon as he signs, he gets added to the ESPN database?

This is a personal aside, but in order for us to keep a player in our league, he has to be on your roster by august 30th. I guess he'll make it, but if ESPN takes a while to add him, I'll be hurting.

I have a chance to use my waiver claim on a good veteran, who I'll be able to retain very cheaply, but I'm not sure if I should wait for Stras.

To all the people who say Strasburg won't pitch this year. Sure, he shouldn't pitch. But keep in mind who his agent is and it could possibly be negotiated into his contract that he be added to the 40 man roster AND called up by September 1st.
