Dump a SP and pick up a closer

Postby BigT » Thu Mar 06, 2003 12:56 pm

Nunez won't even be the marlins closer this year. you should dump one or two of your SPs and get his counterpart, marlin's closer, Braden Looper and another closer just to be safe. you might also trade one of your fielders since your lineup is pretty solid. cliff floyd could be good bait to get a closer, since you have dave roberts on the bench, who will be playing full time this year instead of just platooning. big time potential for steals and BA. think on it

I agree you should get rid of Nunez and try to trade for a closer and probably a 3b too. I don't think Spiezio is going to have the year he did last year. You have the players to trade and get good upgrades for. Otherwise the team is pretty solid.

One more suggestion, on top of 3B and CL, is to find a new shortstop. Womack's best attribute used to be his SB's, but he is averaging half of what he used to in his prime. His OBP and SLG are well below league average, and he's old enough that he won't be improving. I'd be willing to bet there's a better option on the waiver wire.

the biggest concern is relief pitching. kaz sasaki is not the closer he once was, mainly because of his injuries the past year and surgery. i think he is highly overrated this year, and would be good trade bait. another option of trade bait is david wells, someone should fall for his 19 wins last season, but his ERA will kill you, as he won a few too many 10-9 games last year. you have 3 great arms in buehrle, nomo, and kerry wood, so losing wells is no big deal.
i also agree with those who said you should get rid of womack and spiezio. spiezio's heroics in the postseason make him a bit overrated, and you already have more than enough steals to make womack expendable. see what you can get for them. i also agree with trading cliff floyd, as i think he will struggle in new york, and being a lefty, much as roberto alomar did last year. plus , its a pitchers paradise and a hitters hell.
your team has some good areas, but i think doing those changes will make it much better.

your team is pretty damn solid, but one thing you have to watch is a contractless buehrle. it looks like the white sox are trying to trade buehrles rights, they dont wanna pick it up and neither side is really budging, just watch that

Look to trade for a 3rd basemen. Try to pick up aramis ramirez. He looks poised to return to his 2001 form, plus, he'll be pretty cheap and at worst a better option than spaaaazio.
