"Winged it" on my first draft... how did I do?! -- WHIR

Post by zechs »

I showed up to the draft with just a cheat sheet and no prior research in a competitive league (I know, I know...).
It is a 14-team head-to-head league with following scoring categories:
R, H, HR, RBI, SB, TB, AVG, OBP, IP, W, SV, K, HLD, TB, ERA, WHIP
There is also a minimum innings pitched of 35 per week.

This is the roster that I ended up with (I had the 6th pick in a 25-round serpentine draft):
C- Ramon Hernandez (Cin - C): Rd. 19 (pick# 258)
1B- Derrek Lee (ChC - 1B): Rd. 7 (pick# 90)
2B- Robinson Cano (NYY - 2B): Rd. 8 (pick# 107)
3B- Miguel Cabrera (Det - 1B,3B): Rd. 1 (pick# 6)
SS- Orlando Cabrera (Oak - SS): Rd. 18 (pick# 247)
LF- Carlos Quentin (CWS - LF): Rd. 2 (pick# 23)
CF- Alex Rios (Tor - CF,RF): Rd. 4 (pick# 51)
RF- Nick Markakis (Bal - RF): Rd. 3 (pick# 34)
Util- Jay Bruce (Cin - LF,CF,RF): Rd. 6 (pick# 79)
SP- Hong-Chih Kuo (LAD - SP,RP): Rd. 16 (pick# 219)
RP- Jonathan Broxton (LAD - RP): Rd. 9 (pick# 118)
P- Mike Gonzalez (Atl - RP): Rd. 12 (pick# 163)
P- Rafael Soriano (Atl - RP): Rd. 24 (pick# 331)
P- Trevor Hoffman (Mil - RP): Rd. 13 (pick# 174)
P- Joey Devine (Oak - RP): Rd. 14 (pick# 191)
P- Jose Arredondo (LAA - RP): Rd. 15 (pick# 202)
P- Chad Billingsley (LAD - SP): Rd. 5 (pick# 62)
P- Derek Lowe (Atl - SP): Rd. 10 (pick# 135)
BN- Aaron Harang (Cin - SP): Rd. 11 (pick# 146)
BN- John Maine (NYM - SP): Rd. 17 (pick# 230)
BN- Anthony Reyes (Cle - SP,RP): Rd. 23 (pick# 314)
BN- Mike Jacobs (KC - 1B): Rd. 21 (pick# 286)
BN- David DeJesus (KC - LF,CF,RF): Rd. 22 (pick# 303)
BN- Marco Scutaro (Tor - 2B,3B,SS): Rd. 20 (pick# 275)
BN- Brandon Inge (Det - C,3B,CF): Rd. 25 (pick# 342)

Please feel free to pick my team apart -- I want to know your opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of my team as well as who are my steals and/or reaches of the draft?

Thanks for your time.

How many teams are in this league?

You have a ton of depth with that much roster space which should allow you to take a few gambles with some prospects this season. With the large bench, you can add some guys with big potential, and if they dont pan out it wont kill you.

I would point out that next year I might spring for more than just a cheat sheet. I recommend Fanball's owners edge. This was my first year using them, and I was blown away.

Pretty balanced offense...good job there. Your pitching, as stated above, may give you some problems. While I love Kuo and his peripherals will help you bigtime, I would have rather had another SP to go with Lowe and Bills in order to give you more Ws. You are almost punting that no? I dont play roto so maybe I am wrong but I would have preferred to have a Slowey or Baker in that spot. Still a very solid team for drafting on the fly. Thanks with mine!

Oh wait I just looked at it again and saw you have a bench with Harang, Maine, etc. Should be good then if you can move those guys in and out during their starts!

Well Devine is hurt, so I stashed Hoffman on DL and picked up Russ Springer; Springer should be the primary holds guy in Oakland regardless of the closing situation.

If/when Devine goes on the DL, I am thinking about taking a gamble on a starting pitcher. Do you think any of these guys are viable options? (warning: it's really slim pickings at this point...)

Your offense looks good; I especially love that OF. You look to have a nice lineup of closers/set up man, even with Devine likely going to the DL. Billingsley is a stud and will anchor your staff. Harang is due for a bounce back year I think. A solid, if unspectacular bench that can fill in nicely or spot start for you.

If Devine does go on the DL, I think I'd take a flier on Snell out the pitchers you listed. He's not as bad as he showed last year, and is worth using for a few weeks until Devine is ready.
