First ever in-person draft, did I do ok?

Post by Texas Flats »

It's a 10-team, standard 5x5 H2H on ESPN. It's a keeper league we started up last season, and we get to keep up to 5. I kept Teixeira, Utley, Sizemore, Aramis Ramirez and Doc Halladay. I won the league last year and got the last pick in the first (well, technically 6th I guess, since the first 5 were for keepers) round, so I didn't make a pick until 60th overall.

I've gotta say, I don't know if it was because it was in-person instead of online, or maybe because there's so few teams that we had nowhere else to put these guys, but this was one heck of a weird draft. Guys were going wayyyy later than they should've been, for no reason other than the fact that we had no where else to put them. But it was hella fun, and I can't wait until we get to do this again next season.

Without further adieu, here's my team along with the round I picked each guy in:

C - Ryan Doumit (PIT) 12
1B - Mark Teixeira (NYY) K
2B - Chase Utley (PHI) K
3B - Aramis Ramirez (ChC) K
SS - Michael Young (TEX) 10
OF - Grady Sizemore (CLE) K
OF - BJ Upton (TB) 6
OF - Carlos Quentin (CWS) 7
UTIL - David Ortiz (BOS) 8
B - Brad Hawpe (COL) 16
B - Matt Wieters (BAL) 20
B - Justin Upton (ARI) 19

SP - Roy Halladay (TOR) K
SP - Chad Billingsley (LAD) 9
RP - Jonathan Broxton (LAD) 14
RP - Joel Hanrahan (WAS) 18
P - Rich Harden (ChC) 11
P - Javier Vazquez (ATL) 13
P - Matt Cain (SF) 15
B - Aaron Harang (CIN) 17
B - Jonathan Sanchez (SF) 21

My thoughts:

It's not that my bench for the offense there is weak, it's that I don't have backups at any infield positions, so I'm probably going to have to trade one of my surplus outfielders, preferably Quentin here (and Ryan Doumit once Wieters gets called up) for some infield spots. My relief pitching is relatively weak, but my teams are always like that coming out of drafts.

So how'd I do? Approve? Disapprove? What would you try to do here to improve the team?

Leave a link if you'd like...

I'm not a fan of Harden, you might be able to get a decent infielder/reliever in exchange for him.

Good value on Vazquez by the way, I think he'll get you good value for the round you drafted him in.

Any thoughts, praise, criticism, whatever, is definitely appreciated. I'm especially interested in this league because it's not only my first in-person draft, but it's the first year we're doing this for money, so of course I'll take whatever help I can get. Sure, it's only $50, but it's still decent if you win, and I'd like to successfully defend my crown :-D
