Cubs receive Marlins' Gregg

The Chicago Cubs have acquired Florida Marlins reliever Kevin Gregg.

The Marlins received 21-year-old right-hander Jose Ceda in return.

Gregg, who was Florida's closer for most of the 2008 season, saved 29 games last season and was 7-8 with a 3.41 ERA. He blew nine saves for the Marlins in 2008. In 72 relief appearances for the Marlins last seasons, he held batters to a .203 average.

He is the fourth arbitration-eligible player traded by the Marlins this offseason, joining first baseman Mike Jacobs, who was traded to Kansas City, and outfielder Josh Willingham and starting pitcher Scott Olsen, who were traded to Washington.

What Gregg's role will be with the Cubs is unclear. Closer Kerry Wood is a free agent, and Chicago already has a top setup reliever in Carlos Marmol.

Greg joined the Marlins before the 2007 season in a trade from the Angels and had 32 saves in 74 relief appearances that year. He has an 18-21 major league record with 62 saves with a 4.00 ERA in 271 big league games -- all but eight in relief.

The right-handed Ceda was 4-3 with nine saves and a 3.83 ERA last season in minor league stints at Class A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee.

In other news...
From Rotoworld:
After picking up Kevin Gregg today, Cubs GM Jim Hendry said Kerry Wood would not be re-signed.
It looks like Wood was holding out for a multiyear deal, while the Cubs wanted to keep going year to year. Wood could jump to the Mets, Rangers, Cardinals or Brewers as a closer. Some large-market teams may check in and see if he's willing to serve as a setup man. The Rangers and Red Sox had interest in him last winter. Nov. 13 - 3:58 pm et

That's hella lame. Ceda could wind up being miles ahead of both Wood and Gregg. It's gonna be strange seeing Woody in another uniform.

I think its tough to justify giving Wood more than a 2 or 3yr deal and for precisely that reason I can see why he'd wan't one. Gregg is fine as a closer and it will free up some money to deal with our OF problems.

I am sad to see Ceda and Wood go though.

Now that the shock has worn off, same as when we parted ways with Prior - the damage on those arms is good to get off the books. I love both guys, and I'll probably always remember the high, HIGH hopes we had back in 2003 with those two, but as a business decision I see why they let Woody go.

Wood was a great Cub and he did a lot for Chicago. He'll always be a Cub to me.

Good move by the Marlins. I always held my breath when Gregg came in. He did get the job done 29 times, but was pretty inconsistent.

Do you think they give Marmol a shot to win the closer's job out of spring training or is Gregg a lock to start the season as the closer?

I'm guessing Marmol slides in as the closer and Gregg will be the seventh or eighth inning guy.
Haven't heard anything ruling Gregg out as the closer and I don't imagine we will anytime soon.

Yeah, I figure it will be quite some time before anything is definitive, but once the season is underway and Gregg blows a game or two, I think Marmol is the guy.
