I never over-thought Bon Jovi. Decent, listenable music when it came on the radio back in the day. From what I could tell, they started off with intentions to rock, but quickly got caught up in the blossoming glam-video-rock (early-hair-band) genre that was slowly taking over MTV in the mid-80s. Jon has a good voice, and Sambora plays quality lead guitar. Decent songs, well-produced tracks.
They get a moderately enthusiastic thumbs-up from THIS 80s Dude.

Yeah, that's accurate, but there was a glam element to that hair metal too... keep in mind some of those 80s bands (Poison, etc) wore more foundation, eyeliner and rouge than many 70s acts who were considered "glam".
