11th Pick Overall and Don't know what to do. SUGGESTIONS!!

Postby LEVYMAN » Fri Feb 20, 2004 4:26 pm

I'm in a 5X5 Roto League with 12 teams. The first year I didn't know what I was doing and last year was a keeper league and I was dealt a horrible team to start.
Guys in the league are very knowledgeable.

Anyway this year I have the 11th pick and have been trying to figure out a strategy. Figuring AROD, Pujols, Prior. Vlad, Soriano, and probably Helton and Beltran will definetely be gone.

Do I take to stud pitchers and then Offense after that. Pedro/Schilling/Randy Johnson??
Do I take two stud hitters at weak positions like Nomar/Tejada and Boone?
Do I take the best available hitters Sheffield/Magglio
or do I take a pitcher and hitter?? What would you be looking to do.
Just don't want to be weak off the bat in P or OF and I know trades and waivers are a big part but want some opinions.
Thanks...

That's impossible to answer, it all depends on your league. Do the guys in your league generally go after pitching or hitting first? You can try to do what they place emphasis on to not get left behind, or you can try to monopolize what they don't put emphasis on. At the very least, you can't go wrong getting a stud pitcher and a stud SS or 2B with those two picks.

Hard to say without knowing your league, but it is hard to go wrong in the first two rounds if you take the 2 best players available, regardless of position. I'm not one to take pitching too early, so I would suggest at least one of your picks be a position player. However, if there is a pitcher that is too good to pass up, there's no reason not to take him with one of your picks.
It's time to roll the dice.

I would say if you can come out of the first two rounds with Nomar and either Pedro or Schilling, you'd be set up quite nicely.

Go for best players, at 11 I would grab Nomar and then the next best hitter on the way back, regardless of position.

I would look at Thome and Boone.
There will come a day when Barry Bonds leaves baseball, and everything about the game will be the better for it.

Nomar if he's there and then best available. I definately would not take Thome this early.
