Who to keep!!

Postby oldmanbean » Fri Feb 08, 2008 2:35 am

I am in a 12 team league, 25 man roster. 15 hitters, 10 pitchers. Starting lineup is 8 position players, dh, and 6 pitchers, no qualifications on the pitchers. March 1st is roster reduction date, and we must trim down to 10 players. march 22 is the draft to fill out the rosters, 25 rounds. $200 payroll. My current team is as follows, withc their current value:

C- Ronny Paulino $8, M PIazza (now DH) $9
1b - Richie Sexson $17, Mike Jacobs $ 8
2b - Dan Uggla $15, Howie Kendrick $6
SS - JJ Hardy $13, Stephen Drew $8
3B - Mike Lowell $ 7, Alex Gordon $ 10
OF - Hideki Matsui $ 20, Jeff Francouer $19, Carlos Lee $14, Nick Marakakis $6, David deJesus $4
P - AJ Burnett $13, Francisco Coredero $13, Justin Germano $13, Felix Hernandez $9, Mike Pelfrey $5, Ollie Perez $6, Curt Schilling $21,
James Shields $13, Kevin Slowey $ 13, Adam Wainwright $ 14.

I have a trade pending that would bring me Todd helton at 1b in return for swapping draft positions (5th to 7th)

My current planned keepers are: Uggla, Kendrick, Drew, Lowell, Gordon, Francouer, Lee, Marakakis, Felix and Shields. If I get Helton I would not take Shields. I was not planning of keeping Francouer, figuring I could get him back in the 4th round or so, but our league is thin on outfielders, so he might not last.

I would appreciate your opinions on my "keeper" choices. I will offer propsed draft choices after feedback.

Thank you,

I'd stick with Shields, drop Uggla, and keep Wainwright. He had a solid season last year and should only get better, while I think Uggla will struggle this year without Cabrera protecting him in the lineup. That, and I'd hate to have a player who hits .250 on my team, when you have Kendrick to start instead. Other than that, I think the rest of your ideas for keepers are right on point.

while I know he can be flaky from year to year, Ollie Perez at $6 could be a steal. 15 W and 174 Ks last year and he plays for the mets. I'd probably keep him over Wainright. Otherwise, I like your choices.

Helton will cost me $17. I notice you are keen on pitchers vs hitters. In our league, pitchers don't come even close to hitters in scoring. Based on last years points, the average hitter yielded 535 points, pitcher 253.Figuring you use 10 hitters and 6 pitchers, they account for more than 75% of the scoring. I am fairly sure that the good hitting will be off the boards first, which is why I was hanging on to them. I appreciate your input, thanks!

Perhaps I should have been more descriptive of my league. Our scoring system is as follows:

1 point per total base
1 point per run scored
2 points per RBI
1 point for SB
-1 point for CS
NOTE: no penalty for strikeout. I think there should be, but I ain't the commish.
It certainly would change the value of some hitters!

1 point per IP
1 point per K
-1 point per BB
-2 points per ER
5 points per QS
10 points per W
-5 points per L
5 points per S
-5 points per BS

Lineups change each week. Total points for the whole year determines the winner. We used to award points weekly, but some
members complained that overall they had more points, but still finished back on the pack.

Thanks for your help!!

I have decided not to make the trade. He should fall to our $15 round. Also thinking of not protecting Francouer, and
grab him in the $17, which is where I got him last year. Right now the only "good" 1b available are Pena and Loney, but some
more may be released on cut-down day.
